CANTON, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team stayed alive in its postseason push, defeating St. Lawrence in four sets (25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 25-22) in Liberty League action at Ronald T. Burkman Gymnasium Friday night.
The victory, combined with losses by Union and Vassar, puts Skidmore (17-9, 3-3 Liberty League) in control of its own destiny, heading into the league finale on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds move into a tie for fourth place with Clarkson, their opponent in the season finale Saturday at 1 p.m. Skidmore can move up to third with a victory and a Vassar loss tomorrow. St. Lawrence falls to 1-5 in the league and 17-8 overall.
The Thoroughbreds came out firing in this contest, jumping out to 14-5 lead. St. Lawrence would chip away at the Skidmore lead, eventually bringing the deficit to 22-17. Skidmore would finish the set with three straight points, including two kills by
Zoe Beals.
The second set was back-and-forth, with both teams going on scoring spurts to take short-lived leads. Midway through the set, St. Lawrence went on a 6-2 spurt, taking its largest lead at 20-14. Skidmore would try to rally a comeback, scoring five of seven points to bring the deficit to 24-22, but a St. Lawrence kill knotted the match at one.
The third set was another set of long runs. After the Saints took a 12-8 lead early, Skidmore roared back with five straight points to take a 13-12 lead. St. Lawrence retook the lead with a 5-0 run of its own, before Skidmore responded with a 6-0 run, taking a 19-17 lead. The two teams would trade leads, with St. Lawrence holding a 23-21 lead, before Skidmore closed the set with an impressive 4-0 spurt, kicked off by a pair of
Sophia Hettler kills and finished off with a kill by
Katy Ehnstrom.
Skidmore grabbed that momentum and carried it over to the fourth set, taking a 6-1 lead. With a 14-8 lead, St. Lawrence responded with five straight points, reducing the deficit to one. The Thoroughbreds would keep the Saints at bay, preventing the hosts from taking the lead. Skidmore would eventually finish the match scoring four of the last five points.
Ehnstrom led the match with 15 kills, hitting .367.
Caite Canfield added 14 kills and 12 digs, her 10
th double-double of the season.
Lauren Wolters also tallied a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs.
Allie Dillon led the defense with 33 digs.
Skidmore takes the short trip to Clarkson in the aforementioned Liberty League finale on Saturday at 1 p.m.
