GENEVA, N.Y. – William Smith tallied a game-winning goal just 1:40 into overtime, defeating the Skidmore College field hockey team by a 2-1 score, in Liberty League action from McCooey Field Sunday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds, playing in their sixth overtime contest of the season, are 6-8 overall and 1-4 in league action. William Smith moves to a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings at 2-3, and are 5-8 overall.
Skidmore was held without a goal in the first half, despite a flurry of scoring chances near the end of the period. The Thoroughbreds broke through midway through the second half, as

Natalie Metzger from the top of the arc. Metzger would beat William Smith goalie Alexandra DeVito from about three yards out at 54:45.
The Herons would answer right back, off a penalty corner in the 58
th minute. Off the corner attempt, a William Smith shot hit the post, but the rebound eventually found Fallon Adair, who would finish the rebound in traffic. Skidmore would get four chances at net in the final 8:50, but could not get the game-winner as the Thoroughbreds went into overtime for the second consecutive contest.
In the extra session, Skidmore nearly won it in the opening minute, as a
Marissa Folts attempt was saved by DeVito. Nearly 40 seconds later, the Herons won it, as Sophie Craig's shot deflected off Skidmore goalie
Elizabeth Coughlin into the net at 71:40.
Skidmore dominated the shot count with a 13-5 advantage, including a 10-3 margin in shots on net. The Thoroughbreds also earned 12 penalty corners. Coughlin would finish with one save, while DeVito made nine stops to pick up the victory.
The Thoroughbreds will travel to Utica midweek, taking on the Pioneers Wednesday at 7 p.m.
