SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team could not keep up with a hot RIT squad, dropping both halves of the Sunday doubleheader, 10-0 and 11-1 in Liberty League action at Castle Diamond.
The Thoroughbreds drop to 9-18 and 4-14 in league play, while the Tigers take control of the conference standings, improving to 20-6 overall and 14-1 in league play.
A pair of Skidmore errors got RIT off to a fast start in game one, scoring nine unearned runs in the first. Skidmore's best chance came in the top of the third.
Shankar Mani and
Ryan Strickland reached base to begin the frame, then
Steven Gilbert got the runners over on the groundout. RIT starter Jameson Moran then retired the next two batters to end the Thoroughbred threat.
The Tigers added their 10th run in the bottom of the frame, holding that lead in the final three innings for the victory.
Moran (4-0) pitched five shutout innings for RIT, giving up four hits. Ben Clough pitched a perfect two innings in relief. Skidmore's
Jacob Berish (2-2) allowed one earned run on six hits in four innings pitched, striking out a pair of batters.
Jack Walter pitched a scoreless two innings in relief, getting a strikeout. Strickland,
Mat Marino,
Mike Fogarty, and
Daniel Dasgupta tallied hits for Skidmore.
In game two, Skidmore struck first in the first inning. After Gilbert got on via a leadoff single,
Josh Brown got him home with a two-out double. RIT would respond with a two-out rally, scoring six runs in the bottom of the second to take the 6-1 lead. RIT would add three runs in the next inning, and add a run in the fifth and sixth inning.
Brown led the Thoroughbreds with a pair of hits and drove in a run in the second game. Gilbert, Marino, Strickland,
Will Potter, and
Nick Fronte also tallied the Thoroughbred's seven hits.
Jay Gamboa (3-3) got the start, lasting 2.2 innings with seven earned runs and a strikeout.
Spencer Meyer and Chris Reenstierna combined to give up two runs in 3.1 innings in relief, while
Jonathan Kaiser pitched two scoreless innings.
Daniel Zeglen (4-0) picked up the victory for RIT, allowing a run in six innings pitched. Connor Ewing and Kyle Povlock combined to allow a hit in the final three innings.
The Thoroughbreds will next host Southern Vermont on Tuesday, with first pitch beginning at 4 p.m.
