Clarkson defeats Skidmore in 19-13 shootout

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team fell in a shootout to Clarkson by a 19-13 score in Liberty League action at the Hantz Turf Field Saturday afternoon.

Skidmore is now 6-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play, while Clarkson improves to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the league.

Will Lukas led the way offensively for the Thoroughbreds, scoring five points on a goal and four assists. RJ Caruso and Ryan Warnock each added three goals and Brendan Halloran tallied three points on a pair of goals and an assist. Cody Legeza and Jack Curry each tallied a goal and assist to wrap up the scoring.

Eli Millstein picked up five groundballs and won 4-of-7 faceoffs. Lukas, Chris Baughan, Will Pottow, Nick DeBlasio, and Alex Stoffel each caused a turnover. Baughan made eight saves in goal in the first 48:30. Josh Worley finished up the final 11:30.

Ryan DaRin led the Golden Knights with nine points on six goals and three assists. Connor Bartlett (2-3-5) and Ryan St. Croix (4-1-5) each finished with five points. Nick Strandholm made 10 saves in net for the victory.

Skidmore struck first with a pair of goals in the first quarter. Warnock tallied his first goal of the season at 14:33 off the faceoff, then Caruso made Clarkson pay for an earlier penalty with his goal at 12:56. Clarkson would tie the game on a pair of goals by DaRin and St. Croix, but Warnock's second of the game would give Skidmore the lead at 5:19.

Clarkson would later go on a seven-goal run that lasted during the first and second quarters to take a 9-3 lead. The Thoroughbreds would break that drought, with Metzler getting his ninth of the season at 9:21 in the second and Caruso getting his second man-up goal of the game 1:18 later. Clarkson would then tack on three more goals to take a 12-5 lead, before Halloran ended the half with his 22nd of the season, coming at 2:03.

Skidmore once again started the half with a pair of goals, with Warnock getting his third at 14:26 and Metzler getting his 10th at 13:45. DaRin got one back for the Golden Knights, before Lukas assisted on a pair of goals, a Halloran strike at 10:21 and the third man-up goal of the game by Caruso at 5:21. That flurry gave Clarkson a 13-10 lead, but that's as close as the Thoroughbreds could get it. Clarkson scored the next four goals of the game to take the 17-10 lead, and both teams traded goals in the final 13:27 of the fourth.

Clarkson edged Skidmore with a 46-44 shot advantage, but Skidmore forced 11 Clarkson turnovers, while giving up just eight. Both teams went 16-for-17 in clear attempts. The Thoroughbreds went 3-for-6 with the extra attacker and Clarkson converted on all five man-up attempts.

Skidmore will wrap up the 2017 season at Wachenheim Field when St. Lawrence comes to town next Saturday in a 1 p.m. start.
