SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team looks to bounce back in the winning column this weekend as the team heads to Canton for a pair of Liberty League contests against St. Lawrence. The Thoroughbreds and the Saints will play a Saturday doubleheader with game one beginning at 1 p.m.
The Thoroughbreds come into the weekend with a 12-18 record overall and a 2-4 mark in league play. Skidmore is 4-2 over the last six games, with doubleheader sweeps against Rochester and Sage.
Skidmore is currently fifth in the league standings, a game behind St. Lawrence for the fourth spot. Statistically, the Thoroughbreds lead the league in triples (10), walks (90), and stolen bases (41). Individually,
Lauren Fortunato leads the league in a number of categories, including on base percentage (.535), runs scored (28), doubles (10), triples (6), walks (19), and stolen bases (15). The senior is also among the conference leaders with a .432 batting average.
Lizette Roman-Johnston is second on the team with a .345 batting average, scoring nine runs and driving in 15 more, while
Emily Popp rounds out the top-3 hitters with a .286 batting average and 17 RBI.
In the circle,
Amanda Carilli has been solid in conference play. The junior has a 2.72 ERA in six appearances and five starts, with three complete games and a shutout. Overall, Carilli leads the league with 109 innings pitched and is second with nine wins. Popp has a 4.98 ERA in 78.2 innings pitched and leads the team with 43 strikeouts.
St. Lawrence comes into the weekend with a 15-7 record overall and a 3-3 mark in league play. The Saints have won three of the last four games, which includes a sweep of SUNY Potsdam.
Leading the way for the Saints is Angelina Carney, who sports a .422 batting average in 19 games. Ellie Gray is second with a .406 batting average and leads the team with 25 RBI. Gray, Emma Reakes, and Caitlin Syphurs each have three home runs.
Madison Mitchell sports an 8-2 record in circle with a 3.25 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched and 15 appearances. Allie Courtwright leads the team with an even 2.00 ERA, with a 4-4 record in 11 appearances.
Last season, Skidmore and St. Lawrence split a pair of one-run games at Saratoga Springs on April 10. Skidmore took game one 2-1 and St. Lawrence took the second game 8-7. Three of the last four games of the all-time series have been decided by just one run.
