SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior midfielder
Tyler Phillips set a Skidmore College women's lacrosse record for career points, leading the Thoroughbreds in a wild 18-14 victory over RIT in Liberty League action at Wachenheim Field on a warm but windy Sunday afternoon.
Skidmore remains undefeated after the first weekend of league play, improving to 2-0 and 6-4 overall. RIT falls to 5-4 and 0-2 in the conference.
Phillips tied the points record, originally set at 199 by Kimberly Segalas, on her second goal of the game at 28:40 in the first half. She broke the record over 11 minutes later on an assist, coming from behind the net to set up a
Cas Szwajkowski goal at 17:24. Phillips tallied a career-high eight points on four goals and four assists and currently has 205 total points.
Szwajkowski had another great scoring performance, leading all scorers with seven goals.
Lilla Seymour added three goals and
Amanda Orvis netted a pair.
Rachel Talanian and
Louisa Vincent wrapped up the scoring with goals.
Natalie LaBeau tallied three assists, and Vincent completed a three-point day with a pair of helpers. Muscari also tallied an assist.
Talanian was all over the place on defense, causing six turnovers a day after setting the single-game mark with eight in a victory against Rochester. Talanian added nine ground balls and won four draws.
Caroline Kenlon earned the victory in net, making four saves in the final 30 minutes.
Megan Kolopsky tallied a pair of saves in the first half.
Sydney DaCosta scored six goals and added an assist to lead RIT. Emily Livecchi added four points on two goals and two assists.
The scoring was fast and furious between the two sides. Both teams scored in the game's opening minute, before Phillips tallied her first goal at 28:40 to give Skidmore a brief lead. RIT struck back with three straight goals, leading 5-2 with 20:53 remaining in the half. Szwajkowski scored 22 seconds later to break the Tiger run, as the teams traded goals for the next four minutes. Phillips tallied her third of the game at 6:33 and assisted on a Szwajkowski finish to tie the game at seven with 4:21 to go in the half. RIT broke the tie with a Sammy Ward goal at 1:06, going into halftime with an 8-7 lead.
After both teams traded a goal to begin the second half, Skidmore grabbed the lead with five straight goals. Szwajkowski tied the game at nine with an unassisted goal at 27:02, then Phillips gave Skidmore the lead at 25:25. Skidmore took advantage of a DaCosta yellow card when Orvis scored at 21:48, then Talanian capped off the run, picking off a pass by the RIT goalie and finishing low to give Skidmore a 13-9 lead at 19:10.
DaCosta broke the drought for RIT with an unassisted goal, but Skidmore scored three of the next four goals, including its first woman-down goal of the season, to take the biggest lead of the game at 15-11. RIT struck for three straight goals to make things interesting, but Vincent broke the run with a goal at 6:04 and Seymour wrapped the scoring with her goal at 1:52.
Skidmore outshot RIT by a 45-26 margin and won 22 of 34 draws. Both teams were solid in transition, Skidmore converted on 21-of-23 clear attempts while RIT went 18-for-20. The Tigers made 7-of-10 free position shots while Skidmore went 2-for-7. Both teams scored with the woman advantage and the Thoroughbreds converted with a woman-down in the second half.
Skidmore will look to add on to a three-game winning streak as the team faces Clarkson in Potsdam on Friday in a 4 p.m. start.
