SARTAOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College softball team will be well acquainted with Troy by the end of this week, as the city plays host to four contests between the Thoroughbreds, Sage, and RPI. The Thoroughbreds will take on Sage in a Thursday doubleheader on Thursday at 3:30 p.m., and wrap up the weekend with a Liberty League doubleheader against RPI on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
Skidmore (10-16, 2-2 Liberty League) comes into the week after a 4-4 showing in eight games last week against Southern Vermont, Williams, RIT, and Rochester. After splitting four contests against Southern Vermont and Williams, the Thoroughbreds began league play, dropping both games against RIT last Saturday. Skidmore bounced back in a big way, sweeping defending Liberty League champ Rochester on Sunday, 5-4 and 3-0.
Two Skidmore student-athletes earned league weekly awards for their outstanding performances in the last week. Outfielder
Lauren Fortunato was named the league's Performer of the Week and pitcher
Amanda Carilli was named to the league's honor roll.
Fortunato kick-started the offense in Skidmore's eight games last week, batting .556 (10-for-18) with a .692 on base percentage and a .944 slugging clip. Of those 10 hits, the senior hit four doubles and blasted a home run, which came last Tuesday against Southern Vermont. Fortunato also stole three bases, drove in seven RBI, and scored six runs. In the field, Fortunato tallied three assists from center field.
In a doubleheader sweep of defending league champion Rochester on Sunday, Fortunato went 4-for-6, with three RBI, three runs scored, and a pair of stolen bases. Fortunato currently leads the league in runs scored (25), doubles (nine), triples (four), walks (17), and stolen bases (14), and is second in on-base percentage (.560) and hits (30).
Carilli went 3-2 during the week which included winning both games of a crucial doubleheader against Rochester. The junior pitched 18.2 innings, allowing 11 earned runs and struck out nine batters for a 4.10 ERA. She saved her best for Sunday, throwing a complete-game, three hit shutout against Rochester as the Thoroughbreds won 3-0 in game one. Carilli leads the league with 85.1 innings pitched and is tied for third with seven wins on the season.
Lizette Roman-Johnston and
Emily Popp are also swinging a solid bat for the Thoroughbreds. Roman-Johnston is second on the team with a .307 batting average, with 10 RBI and seven runs scored. Popp has proven to be a dual threat in her freshman year. Popp currently has a .278 batting average and is second on the team with 13 RBIs. On the mound, Popp has 38 strikeouts in 72.2 innings pitched, pitching a complete game shutout against Plattsburgh on March 12.
Sage comes into the contest with a 10-12 record overall. The Gators play two games at Westfield State on Wednesday before Skidmore comes to town. The Gators have been on fire as of late, winning nine of the last 11 games.
Alexa Silk leads the Gators with a .389 average and stolen 20 bases and driven in 16 runs. Katy Rimawi shares the team lead with 16 RBI, batting .379.
Allison Ford and Amy Hart share the pitching duties for Sage. Ford is 7-5 with a 3.39 ERA in 72.1 innings pitched, while Hart is 3-7 with a 5.09 ERA in 53.2 innings pitched.
Skidmore and Sage split a pair of contests last year at Wagner Park on March 26. Skidmore took game one 4-2 and Sage won the second game by a 7-3 score.
RPI comes into the weekend with a 14-4 record and a 2-0 mark in league play. The Engineers host Williams on Thursday before resuming league play against Skidmore. RPI has won the last four contests, sweeping Castleton and St. Lawrence in doubleheaders over the past few days.
Stephanie Caudle leads the Engineers with a .436 batting average, four home runs, and 25 RBI. Devan Puhl is also hitting well for the Engineers, batting .435 with 17 RBI and a team-leading 15 runs scored.

Jaime Cleasby is 6-2 with a 2.53 ERA in 10 appearances and six starts, and Sarah Harms rounds out the pitching trio with a 3-1 record and a 2.36 ERA in six appearances and four starts.
This is the first time the two teams have played since the opening game of the 2016 Liberty League Tournament. After Skidmore and RPI split the regular season that year, the Thoroughbreds defeated the Engineers 4-1 to advance to the winner's bracket on May 5.
