Skidmore falls to Union on late overtime goal

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A Union goal with 11 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Dutchmen over the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team, as the Thoroughbreds fell 10-9 in Liberty League action at Frank Bailey Field Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Thoroughbreds fall to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Union improves to 2-2 in the league and 6-4 overall.
 
Jack Metzler provided much of the scoring spark for the Thoroughbreds, tallying a career-high six points on a pair of goals and four assists. Paddy Fallon also tallied a career-best with three goals, while Cody Legeza scored a pair. Colby Farnham and Will Lukas also tallied goals, with Jack Curry providing an assist.
 
Chris Sibilia caused three turnovers and added a ground ball, while Ryan Warnock grabbed six ground balls and won eight faceoffs. Chris Baughan made 10 saves in net in the decision.
 
Kerry Lyne tallied five goals to lead all scorers, while John Edmonds scored three goals and added an assist for Union. Jack Santilli made 10 saves playing in the second half and overtime to earn the victory.
 
Skidmore struck first at 9:31 on a Legeza goal before Union tallied three straight to build a 3-1 lead. Fallon scored his first of the game at 3:01 to break the Union run. The Thoroughbreds then went on a run in the second quarter, outscoring the Dutchmen 4-1 to take a 6-4 lead into halftime. Metzler assisted on Fallon's goal at 13:31 to reduce the deficit to 4-3, then broke the tie with two goals at 10:54 and 9:14, respectively.
 
Union would tie the game after halftime with two goals by Lyne. After withstanding a flurry of shots by the Dutchmen, Skidmore came back on offense and took an 7-6 lead on Fallon's third goal at 3:39. Farnham then tallied another with 16 seconds left off a ground ball to give Skidmore the 8-6 lead heading into the fourth.
 
Lukas found the net at 7:10 to take its largest lead of the game at 9-6, but Union tallied three straight goals, the last coming at 4:24, to tie the game at nine. That score remained until overtime. The Thoroughbreds had a pair of chances to win the game late, as a Fallon shot was saved by Santilli. Just a few seconds later, Legeza's shot with 3:19 to go went wide. Union got the ball with under a minute left on a Skidmore turnover, as Josh Willis eventually scored the game-winner.
 
Union held a slight 39-36 shot advantage, while Skidmore held a 35-32 advantage in ground balls. Skidmore had a season-high four minutes of penalties, but both teams couldn't convert with the extra man. Union was 0-for-5, while the Thoroughbreds missed on two opportunities.
 
The Thoroughbreds will look to bounce back in their next matchup, taking on RPI in Troy on Saturday at 1 p.m.
