Skidmore drops league contest to RPI

TROY, N.Y. – A strong first half performance by RPI was too much for the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team as the Thoroughbreds fell to the Engineers, 17-6, in a Liberty League contest at East Campus Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds fall to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in league play, while RPI improves to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

Cody Legeza and Jack Curry each tallied two points to lead the Thoroughbreds. Legeza tallied two goals, while Curry scored a goal and added an assist. Brendan Halloran, Jack Metzler, and RJ Caruso also scored. Will Lukas added an assist. Will Pottow and Ryan Warnock each tallied three ground balls. Pottow also contributed two caused turnovers. Chris Baughan had 13 saves in the cage, adding four ground balls in 49:58 of game action. Josh Worley made a save in the game's final 10:02.

Zach Lukas scored seven points on three goals and four assists to lead RPI. Breanainn McNeally added four goals and two assists, while Owen Putman led all scorers with five goals. David Gibbs picked up the win in goal, making three saves in the first 40:23 of action.

Legeza scored first to get the Thoroughbreds on the board with an unassisted goal at 13:43. RPI answered with five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead. Skidmore got the final goal of the frame when Metzler curled in front of the crease and scored with 45 seconds remaining. RPI went on to outscore Skidmore 7-0 in the second quarter with Lukas and Putman tallying twice each.

Rensselaer opened the second half with the first three goals - but Skidmore battled back with four of its own. Curry scored at 7:13 and then set up Halloranv2:10 later. The Thoroughbreds pulled to within 15-6 with just under four minutes left in the third, but RPI scored to end Skidmore's run. The Engineers closed out the game's scoring at 4:58 into the fourth quarter.

RPI outshot the Thoroughbreds, 53-31, and held a 51-26 edge in ground balls. Skidmore tallied a season-high in penalties (seven) and minutes (5:30). Skidmore converted on one of its four man-up opportunities, while RPI went 4-for-7 with the extra man.

Skidmore finishes its road swing with a non-league matchup at Wesleyan University on Tuesday at 5pm.
