Huge second half carries Thoroughbreds past Yellowjackets

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team scored the game's final six goals on the way to a 10-5 Liberty League win over the University of Rochester Saturday night at Wachenheim Field.

It was the league opener for both teams. The Thoroughbreds move to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Yellowjackets fall to 4-2 and 0-1.

Cas Szwajkowski and Tyler Phillips scored three goals each to lead the Thoroughbreds. Phillips added four draw controls. Louisa Vincent scored twice and Gianna Muscari and Natalie LaBeau scored one each, with Muscari contributing four draws and two caused turnovers.

Defender Rachel Talanian set a Skidmore record with eight caused turnovers in addition to a game-high six ground balls. The previous mark was seven, achieved by three players, the last time was Lauren Madden in 2010.

Phillips is closing in on the program's all-time scoring mark. The talented senior has 162 goals and 35 assists for 197 points. She's one point away from Liza Gorman's 198 points and two off the record of 199 points held by Kimberly Segalas.

Jamie Wallisch scored three of Rochester's five goals. Jamison Seabury and had goal, while Marian Kern had a goal and an assist.

The teams traded goals in the first half. Wallisch gave Rochester as 3-2 at 3:38. Muscari won the ensuing draw and went right in to tie it 3-3.  Szwajkowski made it 4-3 at 1:44, but Kern tied it 4-4 with 44 seconds left in the half.

Seabury took advantage of a Skidmore yellow card to give Rochester a 5-4 lead at 20:51 of the second half.

Neither team scored for more than 11 minutes, before Skidmore forced a turnover on a Rochester clear that ended when Szwajkowski laid out in front of the net to score her 31st goal of the season at 9:39. That started the 6-0 Thoroughbred run to close out the game.

Skidmore had a 34-14 shot advantage and forced 21 Rochester turnovers.

Megan Kolopsky had six saves for the win, while Conley Ernst stopped 15 shots for UR.

The Thoroughbreds host RIT on Sunday at 2 p.m., while Rochester travels to Rensselaer.
