SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Senior midfielder
Tyler Phillips of the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team set a new school record for career goals, as the Thoroughbreds defeated Utica 15-6 in non-league action at Wachenheim Field Wednesday evening.
Phillips stole a pass deep in Utica's own end in the first half, then turned and fired a high shot to beat the keeper with 15:11 remaining to score her 155th career goal, tying the mark set by Liza Gorman in 2004. She then broke the mark with 55 seconds to go in the first half as Skidmore held the woman-advantage, finishing the game with 156 career goals.
Skidmore improved to 2-1 with the victory, while Utica dropped its first game of the season to fall to 1-1.
Cas Swajkowski led the way for the Thoroughbreds with six goals. Phillips added three and helped on another goal.
Vivian Foley scored her first two collegiate goals in the second half, adding an assist.
Anna Boogaerts and
Kathleen Hanna each added a goal and assist and
Gianna Muscari and
Lilla Seymour wrapped up the scoring for the Thoroughbreds.
Amanda Orvis, Marissa Caponi, and
Zoe Rafalowski-Houseman tallied assists.
On the defensive end, Phillips picked up five ground balls, and Hanna won three draw controls. Kolopsy picked up her second win of the season in net, stopping seven shots in 48 minutes of play.
Caroline Kenlon played the final 11:39, making six saves.
Rebecca Plunkett and Katlyn Scarpinella each scored two goals to lead the Pioneers. Hali Vandermeulen stopped nine shots in 53:04 for the loss. Amanda Lupo made a save in 6:56 of play.
Szwajkowski and Phillips traded goals in the first 14:49 of play, as the Thoroughbreds jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Utica came back with a goal of its own at 10:34, but Skidmore added three more to push to a 7-1 lead. After a Utica goal, Skidmore scored twice in the final minute of the first half, including the record-breaking goal by Phillips, to get to halftime with a commanding 9-2 lead.
Skidmore added to its lead with four unanswered goals to begin the second half, taking a 13-2 lead. Utica answered the Thoroughbreds' run with a 4-1 run of their own, but trailed 14-6. Foley put the finishing touches on the contest, taking a slick feed from Caponi with 2:33 left in regulation.
Skidmore outshot Utica 29-23, and edged Utica in the draw control department by a 12-11 margin. The Thoroughbreds converted on 2-of-4 free position shots, while Utica was 0-for-5.
Skidmore will head to sunny Florida for a pair of games, starting with a contest against Wesleyan University in Englewood on March 13. That game will begin at 5 p.m. Utica will host Clarkson on Saturday at 4 p.m.
