Skidmore drops rain-soaked contest to Trinity

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A 6-1 first quarter advantage was enough for Trinity (Conn.) as the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team fell to the Bantams by a 12-7 score in non-league action on a rain-soaked Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Thoroughbreds drop to 1-3 on the season, while Trinity picks up its first victory of the season to improve to 1-1.
 
Will Lukas scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Thoroughbreds. Cody Legeza and Brendan Halloran each added two goals. Jack Curry scored a goal to complete the scoring, adding an assist. RJ Caruso tallied two assists, with Eric Megina and Will Pottow adding an assist. Ryan Warnock grabbed six ground balls and Chris Sibilia caused three turnovers to lead the defense. Chris Baughan tallied nine saves in 45 minutes of play, while Josh Worley made two stops in the second period.
 
Jack Stallman scored three goals to lead Trinity, while Jack Sharrio scored twice and added an assist. Woody Hamilton made 17 saves to earn the victory.
 
Halloran scored his first goal at 13:41 to open up the scoring. The visitors then scored six unanswered goals, including a man-up tally to pull ahead to a 6-1 lead. From there, the teams evened out. Curry and Legeza tallied goals to reduce the deficit to three, but the Bantams scored three in a row to take their largest lead of the game at 9-3. Skidmore struck with a crucial goal late to make it 9-4. Pottow forced a turnover in the midfield, then flew down the field to hit Lukas with the quick finish with seven seconds remaining in the half.
 
Legeza and Sharrio traded goals for both teams in the third quarter, before Skidmore mounted a comeback attempt in the fourth. Megnia fed Halloran with the high goal at 11:51, then Lukas scored his second with 5:35 left, with Trinity holding a 10-7 lead.
 
Alex Towey forced a turnover for Skidmore on the other end with 4:25 remaining, giving the Thoroughbreds a chance to cut into the deficit further. On the offensive end, Legeza laced a shot into the corner, but Hamilton made a great stop to keep Skidmore off the board. Trinity immediately scored on the other end to keep the game out of reach, then scored an additional insurance goal for the final score.
 
Skidmore outshot Trinity 37-31, and forced the Bantams into 22 turnovers. Trinity won the battle of the face-offs, winning 15 of 23 draws. Both teams scored on a man-up opportunity; Trinity converted on one of three chances, while Skidmore went 1-for-2.
 
The Thoroughbreds will head to Tennessee for a pair of games next weekend, starting with a matchup against Sewanee: The University of the South on Sunday at 2 p.m. Trinity will host Colby in NESCAC play on Saturday at 1 p.m.
