SEWANEE, Tenn. – A dominant defensive effort by the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team led to a 10-5 road victory against Sewanee at Hardee-McGee Field Sunday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds snap a two-game skid, improving to 2-3 on the season. The Tigers fall to 3-3.
Will Lukas tallied three goals to lead the Thoroughbreds.
Jack Curry tallied two goals and
Paddy Fallon,
Cody Legeza,
Brendan Halloran,
Corbin Dunn, and
Chris Melligon also scored.
Jack Metzler tallied three assists, while Halloran and
Eric Megnia each added two.
On the defensive end,
Jack McElgunn,
Ryan Warnock, and
Will Pottow each picked up four ground balls, while
Chris Sibilia took three ground balls and forced a game-high four turnovers.
Chris Baughan was stellar in net, making 17 saves to pick up the victory.
Five different players scored for Sewanee. Selby Austin stopped 12 shots for the Tigers in the loss.
Skidmore started strong in the first quarter, starting the game with a man-up goal by Legeza, eventually pulling ahead to a 3-1 lead. In the second quarter, the Thoroughbreds turned up the defensive pressure, forcing the Tigers into going 3-for-7 in clear attempts. Skidmore kept Sewanee off the board, getting goals from Curry, Fallon, and Lukas to pull ahead to a 6-1 halftime lead.
The Tigers attempted to mount a second-half comeback, getting three goals in the third to trail 7-4 going into the fourth. Lukas completed the hat-trick, scoring a big goal for the Thoroughbreds to open the fourth, and the defense held Sewanee to just one goal the rest of the way, as Halloran and Melligon added goals to complete the scoring.
Despite winning just six of 18 face-offs, the Thoroughbred 'D' forced the Tigers into 24 turnovers and a 15-for-26 mark in clear attempts. Skidmore also took advantage of Sewanee penalties, going 2-3 with a man up.
Skidmore will head west across the state of Tennessee, visiting Rhodes College in Memphis on Thursday at 6 p.m. EST.
