SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Conference play begins for the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team as the squad hosts Vassar at Wachenheim Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Thoroughbreds return home on a two-game winning streak after dominating games in Tennessee last week. The Thoroughbreds (3-3) started their trip with a 10-5 victory at Sewanee on March 12, then completed the sweep with a 10-5 victory at Rhodes on March 16.
The five goals allowed in each contest were the fewest that Skidmore has allowed all season, a credit to the Skidmore defense. In the game at Sewanee, the hosts had trouble clearing the ball and setting up the offense, as the Thoroughbreds forced the Tigers to a 15-for-26 mark in clear attempts. At Rhodes, Skidmore forced the Lynx to go 10-for-18 in clear attempts.
When the teams were able to set up their offense, Skidmore goalie
Chris Baughan provided strength in net during the two victories. He stopped 17 shots against Sewanee and 11 against Rhodes en route to earning Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week honors on Monday.
On offense, the Thoroughbreds are led by first-year attacker
Will Lukas. Lukas is the team's leader with 18 points on nine goals and nine assists. Junior attacker
Cody Legeza leads all Thoroughbreds with 12 goals.
This will also be the league opener for
Vassar, who comes into the matchup with a 6-1 record. In their last contest, the Brewers defeated Colby on Tuesday by a 10-8 score at a neutral site. Liam Moriarty leads Vassar with 23 points on eight goals and 15 assists. Sam Houston-Read and Michael Mullen share the team lead with nine goals. On the other end, Matt Boyd has started in six of the seven games in net, jumping out to a 5-1 record on a 5.11 goals against average and a .629 save percentage. Erik Mikelinich has played in four games and started one behind the net, and he has a 6.80 goals against average and a .541 save percentage.
Last season, the Thoroughbreds fell to Vassar by a 12-10 score on March 26, 2016. Skidmore and Vassar have alternated wins and losses over the last four seasons.
