ENGLEWOOD, Fla. – A late goal by Skidmore sophomore attacker
Cas Szwajkowski lifted the women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 12-11 victory over Stevenson at Ann Dever Park Thursday afternoon.
Skidmore improves to 3-2 on the season, as the squad finishes 1-1 on their Florida trip. Stevenson falls to 3-4 with the loss.
With just under a minute remaining, Szwajkowski picked up a key ground ball to keep the Skidmore attack alive. She fired a shot with 23 seconds remaining, breaking the 11-all tie.
Amanda Cagnassola picked up the ensuing draw to seal the victory for the Thoroughbreds.
Szwajkowski led all scorers, finishing with six points on five goals and one assist.
Natalie LaBeau finished with four points on two goals and two assists.
Allison Byrne added two goals, while
Amanda Orvis,
Lilla Seymour, and
Tyler Phillips each tallied a goal.
Gianna Muscari, and
Rachel Talanian provided an assist each for Skidmore.
Talanian caused three turnovers and grabbed two ground balls to lead the Skidmore defense and Cagnassola won five draws.
Megan Kolopsky made four saves to preserve her third victory of the season.
Olivia Monteiro scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Mustangs. Brady Heher and Mallory Davila scored two goals apiece for Stevenson.
Skidmore staked a 2-1 lead early on thanks to a pair of Byrne goals, but Stevenson scored three in a row to grab a 4-2 lead. Skidmore fought back with a 5-2 stretch, tying the game at seven in the second half on a Szwajkowski tally with 26:00 remaining. The teams traded goals until the 18:28 mark, where Skidmore scored three goals in a nine-minute stretch to take its biggest lead of the game at 11-9.
Stevenson then attempted to mount a comeback, scoring its 10th goal at 7:32 on a Monteiro tally and tying the game at 11 with 1:34 to go in regulation. The Mustangs never held the ball again, as Cagnassola won an important draw, leading to the Szwajkowski game-winner.
Skidmore held a 20-15 shots on goal advantage over Stevenson and forced the Mustangs into 16 turnovers, while giving up a season-best seven. Skidmore also converted on 11-of-13 clear attempts.
The Thoroughbreds return north, but will continue their road swing, heading to Clinton, N.Y. to take on Hamilton next Tuesday at 5 p.m.
