SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Playoff positioning is on the line for the Skidmore College women's basketball team, as the squad wraps up regular season Liberty League play this weekend. The Thoroughbreds travel to St. Lawrence on Friday for a 6 p.m. contest. Skidmore will finish the regular season at home against Clarkson on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Thoroughbreds (15-8, 11-3 Liberty League) currently hold the top spot in the conference, clinching their second playoff berth in three seasons last weekend after defeating William Smith and Union. Skidmore currently has a two-game lead over William Smith and Clarkson with two games to play, and can officially clinch a home game in the league semifinal on Wednesday with a victory. RIT, Vassar, and Union are all fighting for the final playoff spot heading into the final weekend.
Skidmore has raced to an 11-3 record in conference play mainly on its work at the defensive end. The Thoroughbreds lead the league in opponent field goal percentage, with teams shooting just 33 percent from the field. Skidmore is second in both opponents 3-point shooting percentage (26.9%) and scoring defense (55.0 points per game). Nationally, the Thoroughbreds are the seventh-ranked team in the East, according to the latest regional rankings.
Individually,
Kelly Donnelly is making a strong case for the league's player of the year. The junior earned her fourth Liberty League Performer of the Week award after averaging 25.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, and two steals last weekend. Last Friday, Donnelly tied a career-high with 33 points in the 75-57 Big Green Scream victory over then-league leader William Smith. She followed that up the next afternoon with a career-best 20 rebounds to go along with 18 points, as the Thoroughbreds erased a double-digit fourth-quarter deficit at Union, winning 51-46. Donnelly is currently the league leader in points (20.6), rebounds (11.0), and steals (2.6).
St. Lawrence comes into the weekend with a 9-14 record overall and a 6-9 mark in conference play. The Saints come off a 57-44 defeat by the hands of league rival Clarkson on Wednesday. St. Lawrence is second in the league at making shots from beyond the arc, making 5.5 treys a game.
The Saints are led by Meghan Hynes, who averages 10.5 points per game on an efficient 41 percent shooting from the field. Cara Waterson is second with 7.8 points per game, and Shayna Davner is third averaging 7.5 points. Waterson and Davner share the team lead in assists with 2.4 per game.
The last time the teams met was on Jan. 24 in Saratoga Springs. St. Lawrence got the best of the Thoroughbreds, holding Skidmore to just four points in the final three minutes of regulation to preserve the 54-51 win.
Clarkson comes into the weekend with a 15-9 record overall and a 10-5 mark in conference play. They sit tied for second place in the league standings after the victory against St. Lawrence on Wednesday, with the Skidmore matchup being the season finale for the Golden Knights.
Clarkson is one of the hottest teams in the league heading into a possible playoff berth, winning seven of the last eight games and four in a row. In that span, the defending Liberty League Champions have defeated RIT, William Smith, Union, and Vassar, teams vying for a playoff spot.
Devin Sorell leads the Golden Knights, and is second in the league in scoring, averaging 16.2 points per game. Madison Shea and Stephanie Grobe are tied for second, each averaging 10.3 points per game. Shea is third in the league in assists with 3.8 per game, with teammate Alyssia Marsal right behind her with 3.2. Marsal and Shea are also tied for second in the league with 2.5 steals a contest.
The last time these two teams met was on Jan. 10 in Potsdam, N.Y. Donnelly led the team with 28 points and 19 rebounds, and
Veronica Moceri chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds, to lead the Thoroughbreds to a 60-46 victory.
