Second period spurt carries #3 Norwich past Skidmore, 4-0

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Defending national champion Norwich University broke open a 0-0 game with three second period goals on the way to a 4-0 win over Skidmore College Friday night in New England Hockey Conference play at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
 
The Thoroughbreds are 0-3-1 overall and 0-2-1 in NEHC play. The third ranked Cadets are 3-1 and 3-0 in conference.
 
After a scoreless first period, Norwich got on the board when Coby Downs found Todd Jackson from behind the net who hit Kevin Salvucci who connected for his first goal of the season at 1:17. The trio connected on the second goal on a rush with Jackson feeding Downs who had his shot trickle into the net at 8:48. Salvucci had the second assist.
 
Salvucci's second goal of the game came off rebound at 13:17. Downs assisted.
 
Norwich added a power-play goal late in the third on Carter Cowlthorp's first collegiate tally at 16:45 from Jackson and Hall.
 
The Cadets outshot Skidmore 45-24. Brandon Kasel had 41 saves, including 17 in the second period. Braeden Ostepchuk stopped 24 shots for the shutout.
 
The Thoroughbreds host Castleton on Saturday at 4 p.m., while Norwich travels to Hobart for a 4 p.m. contest.
