SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Castleton University pulled away late for a 4-1 New England Hockey Conference win over Skidmore College Saturday evening at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

The Thoroughbreds drop to 0-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 in NEHC play, while the Spartans move to 2-3 and 1-3 in the NEHC.

None of the five goals were full strength with the teams combining for 26 penalties.

Skidmore had the quality plays in an even first period.
Max Hegge got pulled down on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot at 15:47 for the Thoroughbreds. Castleton goalie Wyatt Pickrell stood his ground for the save to keep it scoreless after one.

The Spartans scored early in the second when Caleb Fizer scored on a long distance shot that found the top corner at :41. Nathan Corey had the assist. Skidmore found itself on the wrong side of the whistle for most of the period, killing off seven penalties before Glenn Wiswell scored on a rebound during a two-man advantage at 15:20 from Trevor Hanna and Troy Taylor to make it 2-0.

Castleton made it 3-0 on another 5-on-3 at 2:42 of the third from Fizer. With the goalie out and on the power play, Skidmore got on the board at 5:28 when
Adam Moodie beat Pickrell stick side to cut it to 3-1. Matt Muzyka and
Tim Allen assisted.

Jake McCarthy halted the Thoroughbred comeback with an empty net goal at 17:29.

Castleton outshot Skidmore 37-27 with 22 shots coming on the power play. The Spartans were 2-16 on the power play, while the Thoroughbreds were 1-7.

Brandon Kasel stopped 33 of 36 shots for Skidmore, including 17 in the second period to keep the Thoroughbreds in the game. Pickrell finished with 26 saves.

Skidmore will hit the road for a weekend league games at Babson on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. and UMASS Boston on Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. Â
