Thoroughbreds fall in five to league-leading Vassar

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College volleyball team went toe-to-toe with Liberty League-leading Vassar, falling in five sets (26-24, 23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-10) in a dramatic league contest Friday evening at the Williamson Sports Center.

Skidmore has its win streak snapped at five to fall to 12-7 overall and 2-2 in conference action. Vassar wins its eighth in a row to improve to 16-3 and 4-0.

It was a nip-and-tuck battle throughout, as the two hottest teams in the conference traded leads 22 times and held 39 ties in the five-set match. Vassar tallied three straight points to steal the first set, before Skidmore rallied in the second, knotting things up at one.

In the third, Skidmore tried to rally down 21-16, but Vassar held off the Thoroughbred charge to take a tight third set. With the match tied at 21 in the fourth, Skidmore went on a 4-1 spurt to force a fifth set, its third in four Liberty League contests.

The fifth set saw Skidmore hold an 8-7 lead as the teams switched sides, but the Brewers immediately went on a 6-0 run to hold off the Thoroughbreds.

Caite Canfield led the Thoroughbreds with a double-double, racking up 20 kills and 13 digs. The junior also added three service aces and a pair of blocks. Bailey Hutchins also racked up a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs. Katy Ehnstrom added 14 kills while hitting .346 and Lauren Wolters added 49 assists to help the Skidmore offense.

Allie Dillon added a game-high 28 digs, while Wolters completed her second double-double of the season with a season-high 14 digs. Rachel Licata added a team-high six blocks.

Jane McLeod and Devan Gallagher combined for 43 kills to lead the Vassar offense, while Annie MacMillian contributed a game-high 54 assists.

Skidmore will hit the road for the first time in league action, traveling to Bard on Saturday for a 4 p.m. match.
