SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A postseason spot suddenly hangs in the balance for the Skidmore College men's soccer team, as they head up north to Canton for a critical Liberty League matchup against St. Lawrence on Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Thoroughbreds (5-2-6, 1-1-5 Liberty League) currently find themselves in the playoff zone, tied for fifth place with RIT, with eight points and a pair of contests remaining in the regular season. Skidmore, RIT, RPI, and Ithaca are currently fighting for the last two playoff spots, with Ithaca and RPI sitting just a point behind the Thoroughbreds and Tigers.
The Thoroughbreds come off a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Clarkson Wednesday night, dropping their first league contest of the season.
Ben Poole and
Augustine Okoye scored, while
Ben Caples and
Matt Schwab provided the assists for the Thoroughbreds.
Okoye currently leads the Liberty League with 20 points, on a league-leading nine goals and two assists. The senior forward has tallied a goal in each of the last three contests.
Kevin Santos is second on the team with seven points, on a pair of goals and three assists.
Mike Park is second in goals with three, all off set pieces or penalty kicks.
Dario Flores has paced the Thoroughbred attack with a team-leading four assists. In goal,
Sebastian Bosch has a 0.92 goals against average and an .821 save percentage in nearly 1,200 minutes and 13 starts. He stands third in the conference in both GAA and save percentage.
SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE
St. Lawrence comes into the matchup with a 6-5-3 record and a 4-1-2 mark in league action. The Saints come off a weekend split, defeating Bard before falling to league-leading Vassar.
Leading St. Lawrence in scoring are Jethro Dede and Brendan McNamee, who each have 13 points. McNamee leads the team with six goals, adding an assist, while Dede has five goals and three assists. Tapshak Augustine paces the Saints offense with four assists. Mike Smith has played every minute for St. Lawrence in net, tallying a 1.57 GAA with a .697 save percentage.
Skidmore got the best of the Saints in their last meeting, at Wachenheim Field on Oct. 8, 2016. Santos tallied a pair of goals as the Thoroughbreds upended then-No. 10 St. Lawrence 2-0.
