Skidmore powers past Daniel Webster, 6-1

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College men's hockey team scored five power-play goals on the way to a 6-1 win over Daniel Webster College, Saturday evening at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.
 
The Thoroughbreds pick-up two  big points to remained tied for second with New England College in the New England Hockey Conference with a 6-2 league and 7-7-1 overall record.
 
Connor Pelkey put the Thoroughbreds in front with a power-play goal at 4:15 of the first from Marc Cibelli. Skidmore controlled the pace of the period, outshooting the Eagles 19-5, but Daniel Webster goalie Anthony D'Urso kept his team in the game with 18 saves.
 
Skidmore broke it open in the second period with three goals. With Thomas Puetz in the box for a 5:00 interference penalty for the Eagles, the Thoroughbreds converted twice for a 3-0 lead. Matt Wolf scored from Matt Bernot and John Litscher at 10:08 and Litscher tallied his third of the season at 11:34 with Sam Loizeaux and Corey Morgan assisting.  Wolf's second of the game came with both teams at full strength at 15:51 for a 4-0 lead after two.
 
The Eagles stopped the shutout one minute into the third period. Chris Timm connected on  a 2-on-1 with Steven Smoltz and Ryan Murray credited with the assists.
 
The Thoroughbreds tacked on a pair of power-play goals for the 6-1 final. Owen Campbell scored his sixth of the season from Cibelli and Bird at 3:23 and Bird tallied his eighth from Cibelli and Quincey Gregg at 17:35.
 
Skidmore had a wide 60-15 shot margin. Brandon Kasel stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced, while D'Urso finished with 54 saves.
 
The Thoroughbreds were 5-10 on the power play after scoring nine pp goals in their first 14 games. Daniel Webster was 0-4.
 
Skidmore hits the road next week for NEHC games at St. Anslem (Jan. 13) and New England College (Jan. 14).
