SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A home midweek Liberty League contest and a trip down to Brooklyn highlight a busy week for the Skidmore College women's basketball team. The Thoroughbreds will host St. Lawrence in league play on Tuesday at 5 p.m., moved up from its original 6 p.m. start. Skidmore will then take a brief break from league play, heading to New York City to take on Brooklyn College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Skidmore comes into the week with an 11-6 record overall, sitting in second place in the league standings at 8-1. The Thoroughbreds went 2-0 over the last few days. On Friday, junior guard
Kelly Donnelly scored 29 points and fellow junior guard
Veronica Moceri added 13, as the Thoroughbreds held off RPI in a 60-55 victory in Troy. Saturday saw a balanced scoring effort, which included a career-high 13 points from sophomore forward
Taylor Ong off the bench, as Skidmore defeated Bard 64-36.
Over the weekend, the Thoroughbreds held its opponents to a combined 28 percent shooting from the field and a 5-for-34 (14.7%) performance from beyond the arc. That defensive effort put the Thoroughbreds back in the top spot for defensive field goal percentage (33.9).
On the offensive end, Skidmore feasted in transition, scoring 20 points off of RPI turnovers on Friday and 24 points off of Bard turnovers on Saturday. The bench unit also scored a season-best 36 points in the victory against Bard.
St. Lawrence comes into the week with a 5-10 record overall, and a 2-5 mark in league play. The Saints still sit a game and a half behind fourth-place Clarkson in the league standings with a game in hand. The Saints went 1-2 last weekend, first defeating Keuka 66-40 at home on Tuesday, then falling to RIT and William Smith on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
The Saints are led by guard Meghan Hines on the offensive end, averaging 10.4 points per game. Fellow guard Shayna Davner is right behind Hines with 7.4 points per game, and leads the team in rebounds (5.4).
This is the first meeting this season between Skidmore and St. Lawrence. Last season, the Thoroughbreds swept the season series, increasing their winning streak against the Saints to five.
Brooklyn College, member of the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC), comes into the week with a 12-4 record overall, sitting in second place in the CUNYAC standings at 8-2. The Bulldogs split a pair of games last week, defeating Hunter College 58-48 on Wednesday, before falling to Lehman 58-64 on Friday.
Forward Olivia Colbert leads the Bulldogs with 10.0 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game. Guards Alexandra Moogan (9.4 points) and Karen Mak (8.3 points) are right behind Colbert in scoring. Forward Maya Ajee-Thomas is second in the CUNYAC in blocked shots per game (2.4).
