SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team is putting its season-high five-game winning streak on the line as it heads west for a pair of Liberty League games against RIT and William Smith this weekend.
The Thoroughbreds (8-5, 5-0 Liberty League) will take on RIT in Rochester on Friday at 6 p.m. before finishing the weekend at William Smith in Geneva on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Skidmore last played Tuesday evening, when the team traveled to the North Country, defeating Clarkson 60-46. Junior guard
Kelly Donnelly scored her 1,000th career point, becoming the 14th player and third junior in Skidmore history to do so. She finished with 28 points and a career-high 19 rebounds.
Veronica Moceri also tallied a double-double – her first of the season – with 12 points and 10 rebounds, adding four assists and two steals.
Skidmore's defense has been terrific during the five-game win streak. The Thoroughbreds have allowed just 53.2 points per game, with teams shooting a mere 34.4 percent from the field. Skidmore is tops in the league in field goal percentage defense (34.0) and is third in scoring defense (55.9).
RIT comes into the contest with a 9-3 record and a 2-2 mark in conference play. The Tigers had an up and down week, falling 72-62 to No. 22 Rochester and 83-72 to Vassar, before rebounding with a resounding 95-29 win against Bard.
Guards Cori Okada and Jessica Glaz, along with forward Tara Lynch are among the top scorers in the league. Lynch, the league's fourth leading scorer, leads the trio with her 14 points per game, with Okada (13.7) and Glaz (13.3) not far behind.
The two teams meet for the second time in 14 days; the Thoroughbreds took game one in Saratoga Springs by a 67-66 score. Both Donnelly (24 points, 12 rebounds) and senior forward
Migle Vilunaite (15 points, 12 rebounds) compiled double-doubles as the Thoroughbreds erased a late six-point deficit.
William Smith comes into the matchup with a 9-3 record, and is the only other unbeaten team in league play. The Herons will put their own four-game win streak on the line against Rensselaer on Friday before hosting the Thoroughbreds. This past week, William Smith defeated Bard 78-33 and Vassar 69-65 on the road before defeating Union 65-54 in Geneva.
The Herons sport three double-digit scorers. Guard Melanie Patterson leads the pack with her 14.8 points per game, adding 3.2 assists and 4.1 rebounds. Forward Mia Morrison is right behind her with 13.2 points and 7.0 rebounds, while guard Natalia Baum adds 10.8 points and 3.1 assists.
This is the first meeting between the teams this season. Last year, the Herons took both games of the season series. Both teams are 6-6 in the last 12 games of the series.
