No. 10 field hockey falls to No. 3 Middlebury, 2-0

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College field hockey team fell to No. 3 Middlebury, 2-0 at Wagner Park on Wednesday evening. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak. The Thoroughbreds will open Liberty League play against Union on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Thoroughbreds, the 10th ranked team in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll, fell to 7-2 on the season. The Panthers improved to 5-1 with the victory.

Gabby Hyman led the Thoroughbreds with four shots, two on goal. Becca Halter also tallied two shots on goal. Goalie Elizabeth Coughlin recorded a season-high eight saves in the decision. Skidmore was outshot for just the second time this season, 17-10.

Annie Leonard and Molly Freeman tallied unassisted goals for the Panthers. Emily Miller made five saves in net in the victory.

The Panthers got on the board just 30 seconds in. Off a long attempt by Skidmore, Middlebury corralled the ball from outside their own penalty circle and fired a long pass that found Leonard outside the Skidmore penalty circle. Leonard moved to the center and fired a high shot that beat the Skidmore goalie to the right.

In the seventh minute, Freeman corralled the ball off a deflection, and tipped it home to give Middlebury the 2-0 lead.

Skidmore had a few opportunities to bring the game closer in the second half. Off a penalty corner in the 57th minute, Becca Halter uncorked a shot that Middlebury goalie Emily Miller just got a pad on. In the final minute of regulation, Hyman appeared to have tipped in a goal off a long Skidmore pass, but the officials waved the goal off.
