Field hockey notches third straight shutout with 10-0 victory over Castleton

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College field hockey team scored nine first half goals, en route to a 10-0 victory over Castleton at Wagner Field on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. The Thoroughbreds will next host Cortland on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 12:30 p.m.

Skidmore, ranked 13th in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III national poll, improved to 5-1 on the season. Castleton dropped to 2-5 with the loss.

Krista Lamoreaux and Gabby Hyman each tallied two goals and two assists to lead the Thoroughbreds. Seeley Fancher, Grace Florsheim, Miranda Davenport, Kayla Rose, Mallory Perry, and Emily Richmond also scored. Becca Halter tallied two assists, one in each half.

Elizabeth Coughlin tallied her third consecutive shutout victory, this time without recording a save in the first 31:25. Maddy Carrè made seven saves in relief to hold the shutout.

Meeghan Doris made four saves as the goalie of record, playing in the first half. Leah Holland relieved Doris in net, and tallied four saves as well.

Florsheim struck first for the Thoroughbreds in the fifth minute, tipping it in off a feed from Lamoreaux in the penalty circle. Three minutes later, Hyman received the ball around midfield on a Castleton turnover, and made an individual effort at goal, beating the goalie to double the score. Lamoreaux got on the board in the 12th minute off a Skidmore penalty corner. Hyman fed Lamoreaux, who tapped in the pass in the corner of the net.

Skidmore then scored twice in a 33-second span in the 14th minute. Hyman tallied her second of the game, off a Halter pass from the top of the penalty circle. Richmond scored 33 seconds later, off a Castleton turnover and a feed from Hyman.

After a Lamoreaux goal gave the Thoroughbreds a 6-0 lead, Rose scored her first of the season in the 26th minute. Off an initial shot by Rose, Lamoreaux fed Rose again, and her second shot slid by the goalie. Davenport and Fancher each scored their second goals of the season, 54 seconds apart to end the first half.

In the second, Perry scored her first collegiate goal, off a pass by Halter from outside the penalty circle in the 64th minute, to close the scoring.

Skidmore outshot Castleton by a 34-12 advantage, including a 28-1 advantage in the first half. The Thoroughbred defense held strong once again, holding opponents scoreless for the last 228:48 minutes of game action.
