Skidmore offense clicks in 18-6 win over Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. – Skidmore had goals from 10 different players in an 18-6 win over Castleton University Tuesday evening at Spartan Stadium.

The win moves the Thoroughbreds to 5-5, while the Spartans fall to 5-4.

Leading the way for Skidmore were Brendan Halloran and Jack Metzler who each had three goals and one assist. Eric Megnia added four assists and one goal, while Kevin Mulvey had three goals.  Logan Hart had three caused turnovers and five ground balls. 

The Thoroughbreds led 1-0 early, before back-to-back goals 38 seconds apart pushed the lead to 3-0 with nine minutes remaining in the period. They added two more goals, before Castleton got on the board with just two seconds left in the quarter to trail 5-1. 

Skidmore scored six straight to open the second quarter, pushing its 11-1 advantage with four minutes left in the period. The Spartans scored with 13 seconds left to make it 11-2 at the half.

 In the second half the Thoroughbreds extended their lead to 14-3, before three goals trimmed the Spartan deficit to 14-6 with 14 minutes left in regulation. Skidmore added four goals in the final seven minutes for the 12-goal victory

Castleton was outshot 51-20 and picked up just 29 groundballs as the team dropped to 5-4 overall. The Thoroughbreds, meanwhile, picked up 38 ground balls, forced 24 turnovers and won 16 of 26 faceoffs to improve to 5-5 overall. . 

The Thoroughbreds' Chris Baughan played the first 45 minutes and gave up five goals while making one save to secure the win. Josh Worley made one save and allowed a goal in the fourth quarter.

Skidmore returns to Liberty League action on Saturday at second ranked RIT at 1 p.m.
