Thoroughbreds rally late for 11-10 win over St. Lawrence

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Caz Szwajkowski scored a free position goal with 21 seconds left in regulation to give the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team an 11-10 Liberty League win over St. Lawrence University Friday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
 
The win moves the Thoroughbreds (7-6, 4-2 Liberty) past the Saints (8-7, 4-3) and into fourth place in the Liberty League standings with three games to play. Skidmore will host second place Clarkson on Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
Szwajkowski had a game-high five goals and one assist. She also had two ground balls and a key draw control that led to the winning goal. Emma Harris, Natalie LaBeau, and Tyler Phillips had two goals each. Harris had two draw controls and Phillips three.  Rachel Talanian had four ground balls, five draw controls and four caused turnovers.
 
Kayla Schmalz led the Saints with three goals, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Kara Hurley and Alexandra LaMotte added two goals each. LaMotte had a team-high four draws.
 
Skidmore went up 2-0 on goals by Phillips (27:23) and Szwajkowski (22:57). St. Lawrence responded with a pair of quick goals from Schmalz (20:36) and Abigail Owens (19:21) to tie it 2-2.
 
The teams traded goals until Szwajkowski scored three straight, including twice in the final 30 seconds of the first half to give Skidmore its largest lead 7-4.  LaMotte stopped the run with a free position goal with 1.1 seconds left to make it 7-5 at the half.
 
Hurley cut it to 7-6 at 27:36, but Phillips answered with her 39th goal of the season at 25:01 to put Skidmore back up by two, 8-6.
 
The Saints battled back with three straight goals from Lamotte (24:13), Hurley (16:49), and Olivia Slade (13:51) to take the their first lead of the game, 9-8.   The Thoroughbreds tied it when Szwajkowski drew two SLU defenders and sent a quick pass to Emma Harris who immediately fired the ball past Saint goalie Olga Lukas at 7:54. 
 
With the game tied 9-9, both teams were deliberate with possessions over the final minutes.
 
SLU forced a turnover with 1:58 to play, but Allison Byrne had a big midfield turnover to break up the clear at 1:34. Skidmore took advantage when Anna Boogaerts connected with LaBeau who gave the Thoroughbreds the 10-9 edge with her 17th of the season with :48 left.
 
The Saints weren't through. Schmalz won the draw and got fouled as she headed to goal. She calmly converted the free position to tie it 10-10 with :34 seconds to play.
 
This time it was Szwajkowski who won the draw and got fouled hard as she quickly moved to the net. She made a great move on the free position to score the game-winner with :21 left. Talanian won the draw and Skidmore ran the clock out.
 
Skidmore out shot the Saints 29-19, both teams had 15 turnovers. Megan Kolopsky stopped eight shots for the Thoroughbreds. Lukas had 11 saves for SLU.
