Skidmore opens lacrosse season with 14-4 win over Hartwick

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—First-year players accounted for eight of Skidmore's 14 goals in a 14-4 non-league women's lacrosse win over Hartwick College Wednesday night at Wachenheim Field.
 
Junior Tyler Phillips led the Thoroughbreds (1-0) with four goals and two assists. Rookies Gianna Muscari and Cas Szwajkowski scored three goals each, while classmates Anna Boogaerts and Natalie LaBeau tallied solo goals. Boogaerts added a pair of assists, while LaBeau had one assist.  Marisa Caponi and Emily O'Connor scored one each to round out the balanced attack.
 
Lauren Rosenberg had two goals for the Hawks (1-1).  Megan Young and Abby Letourneau had solo goals, while Courtney Coons recorded two assists.
 
Skidmore opened the game with three straight goals from LaBeau, Muscari and O'Connor to go up 3-0.  Letourneau got Hartwick on the board at 11:50 of the first half to make it 3-1.  The Thoroughbreds responded with a pair of quick goals from Phillips to extend the lead to 5-1 with 8:22 left. Rosenberg kept the Hawks within three with a goal at 7:10.  The Thoroughbreds closed out the half with four straight goals, including two from Szwajkowski to lead 9-2.
 
Skidmore opened it up with four straight goals to start the second half on the way to the 14-4 final.
 
The Thoroughbreds won 17 of 20 draw controls and had a 25-20 shot advantage.  Muscari contributed a game-high six draws, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Rachel Talanian added three draws. 
 
Skidmore goalie Megan Kolopsky had six saves in 55:00, while Taylor Goodwill stopped three shots in the final five minutes.  Carleigh Tarala had six saves for Hartwick.
 
The Thoroughbreds travel to Babson on Saturday for a 3 p.m. game.
