Skidmore opens season with 16-10 win over Babson

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Kevin Mulvey scored six goals to lead the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team to a 16-10 non-league win over Babson College Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
 
It was the opener for both teams and the first win at Skidmore for Thoroughbred head coach Tucker Kear.
 
In addition to Mulvey, Cody Legeza had three goals and three assists and Eric Megnia and Ian Maag had two goals each. Brendan Halloran, Jack McElgunn, and Jack Metzler had solo tallies.
 
Axel Brown led the Beavers with four goals, while Connor Flaherty had two goals and an assist.
 
A wild first quarter ended with the Skidmore up 6-5. The Thoroughbreds scored all four second quarter goals to take a 10-5 lead into the break.
 
Babson scored first in the third to cut it to 10-6, but Skidmore responded with three straight, including a pair from Mulvey to break it open 13-6.
 
The Beavers had a 57-43 shot advantage, but Thoroughbreds goalie Chris Baughan handled the workload with 18 saves. Jordan Shapiro had 11 saves for the Beavers.
 
Ryan Warnock won 11 of 21 face offs and had a team-high eight ground balls for Skidmore.
 
The Thoroughbreds host MIT on March 5 at 2 p.m.
