SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team heads to the Nutmeg State to participate in the Wesleyan Tournament, held on the campus of Wesleyan (CT) College this weekend. The Thoroughbreds will take on Keene State in the second game of the doubleheader at 8 p.m. on Friday. They will advance to either the consolation or championship game on Saturday, to face off against either Worcester State or host Wesleyan.
The Thoroughbreds come into the weekend with two games played already this week. On Monday, the Thoroughbreds relied on timely defense and clutch shooting to defeat Sage 51-48 at the Williamson Sports Center. Forward
Migle Vilunaite led Skidmore with 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field. The next day, the Thoroughbreds fell on the road to Williams, 62-53. Guard
Kelly Donnelly led Skidmore with her third double-double of the season, scoring 22 points and adding 10 rebounds, adding four steals.
Donnelly leads the Liberty League in scoring and is second in rebounding just five games into the season, averaging 19.6 points and 10.6 rebounds.
Keene State, member of the Little East, enters the matchup with a 3-2 record, after defeating Liberty League foe Rensselaer 72-65 on Tuesday. The Owls started the season at the Williamson Sports Center, going 1-1 in the Skidmore Invitational. Guard Lydia Vital, who was named to the Skidmore Invitational's All-Tournament team, leads the Owls with 14.6 points and 4.0 assists per game. Forward Amanda Petrow leads Keene State with 8.0 rebounds per game.
In the other semifinal, MASCAC member Worcester State comes into the weekend with a 3-3 record. They, like Skidmore, will also play four games in a seven-day span, after going 1-1 to start the week. The Lancers defeated Wellesley 61-52 on Sunday, then fell to Connecticut College on the road 65-34 on Wednesday. Center Britt Herring leads the team with 13.2 points and 7.3 rebounds, shooting an impressive 62.1 percent from the field after six games.
Host Wesleyan, member of the NESCAC, comes into the tournament with a 2-3 record. Over the last few days, the Cardinals fell to Drew 71-61 on Sunday, before snapping a three-game losing skid with a 57-50 victory over Manhattanville College. Guard Olivia Gorman leads the Cardinals with 11.0 points per game, shooting 30.8 percent from the field coming off the bench.
