Thoroughbreds finish 1-1 at the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's hockey team fell to Neumann 8-1 in the championship game of the 11th-annual Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational at the Saratoga City Ice Rink on Sunday afternoon.

The loss snaps a four-game win streak for the 14th-ranked Thoroughbreds, as they fall to 1-1 over the weekend and 6-3 overall. Neumann improves to 7-3 on the season.

The Knights took an early lead with three quick goals in the span of 3:54. Jory Mullin started the scoring with a shot in the kill zone that deflected off the glove of Skidmore netminder Brandon Kasel and into the net. Mullin then assisted on the second goal, feeding Shayne Morrissey at the top of the right faceoff circle, with Morrissey's shot going high in the net. 10 seconds later, Anthony Pino knocked home the rebound off a saved shot.

In the second period, Liam Board gave the Knights the 4-0 lead on the Morrissey feed on the Neumann break. The Thoroughbreds answered a few minutes later, as Connor Pelkey fed Matt Bernot along the boards past the blue line, as Bernot rifled a high shot that beat Neumann netminder Anthony Pupplo high on the stick side. Mullin answered with his second goal near the end of the period, a shorthanded tally on a breakaway.

In the third period, Neumann's Shane Topf scored twice, including the Knight's second shorthanded goal, before Mullin completed the hat trick with his third tally at 17:56.

Skidmore dominated on the face-offs in the championship match, earning 41-of-67 attempts in the circle, while Neumann outshot the Thoroughbreds 35-28 in the contest. Pupplo picked up his second win of the weekend, stopping 27-of-28 shots, while Kasel stopped 21 shots in the first 44:59 of play. Jack McDonald played the final 15:01 in net, making six saves.

The Thoroughbreds will host #8/#8 Hobart in a weekend series at home, starting on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Saratoga City Ice Rink.

Fitchburg State 3, Connecticut College 2

Fitchburg State's James Gordon broke a 2-2 tie at 13:22 in the third period to give the Falcons the 3-2 victory in the consolation game of the Skidmore Thanksgiving Tournament Sunday afternoon.

On the odd man rush, Nick DiNicola fed Gordon across the ice. Gordon's shot from the top of the face-off circle finished high past Connecticut College goaltender Avery Gobbo.

The Falcons improve to 4-4-1 on the season, while the Camels drop to 0-4.

The Camels opened the scoring on a goal by Rory Galasco in front of the net midway through. Nearly two minutes later, Fitchburg State's Cameron Snyder tied it with a top shelf rocket that beat the goalie stick side.

In the second period, with the Falcons killing off a penalty, Gordon scored the first of his two goals on a breakaway off a blocked shot, giving the Falcons the 2-1 lead.

Connecticut College tied it at 2 early in the third period, when Brian Belisle beat Fitchburg State netminder Kirby Saari on a tough shot from the red line to the right of goal.

Connecticut College outshot Fitchburg State 29-20. Both penalty kill units were perfect in the contest, with the Falcons stopping all five attempts, and the Camels stopping four chances. Kirby Saari picked up the victory, making 18 saves, while his counterpart Avery Gobbo stopped 17 shots faced.
