Thoroughbreds edge Liberty leader Vassar, 3-2

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.—The Skidmore College volleyball team wrapped its Liberty League season at home Saturday, beating regular season champion Vassar 3-2 (16-25, 23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 15-13) after a  3-2 (19-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-15, 15-13) loss to St. Lawrence.
 
The Thoroughbreds (14-15, 5-7) will conclude the season at home Oct. 28-29 with the Skidmore Invitational.
 
In the first match, Skidmore took a 2-0 lead 25-19, 25-19, before the Saints (12-17, 3-9) battled back to win the next three. Bailey Hutchins posted a triple double with 13 kills, 10 digs, and 25 assists. She powered through four aces.  Marcella Familiar had a match-high 20 digs and Caite Canfield added 15 kills, 11 digs, and two blocks. Lauren Wolters chipped in 20 assists, and Kalle Fox contributed six aces and five digs.
 
The gritty Thoroughbreds battled back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Vassar (18-9, 9-3). Earlier in the day the Brewers beat Clarkson 3-2 to win the Liberty League regular season title.  Skidmore scored the final six points of the fourth set to win 25-19 and took an early 10-6 lead on the way to the 15-13 fifth set win.
 
Hutchins had her second triple double of the day with 10 digs, 11 kills, and 26 assists to go along with five blocks.  Katy Ehnstrom totaled team-high 17 kills and seven blocks. Canfield had 14 kills and 10 digs, while Wohlters had 19 assists. Familiar was her steady self on defense with 23 digs. Skidmore totaled 24 blocks (two solo) with four each from Sophia Hettler and Emilie Bode.
