Liberty Weekend for Thoroughbred basketball teams

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— The Skidmore College basketball teams host Union and Rensselaer this weekend in a pair of key Liberty League match-ups.
 
The women (8-7, 3-4 Liberty) play league leader Union (11-3, 6-1) on Friday at 6 p.m. and RPI on Saturday (5-9, 1-4) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
The men (9-6, 4-3) are scheduled to tip at 8 p.m. Friday against Union (6-8, 4-3) and Saturday at 4 p.m. vs. RPI (7-7, 1-4).
 
Kelly Donnelly continues to top the Thoroughbred women in scoring with 15.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. She had her second 20 point game of the season in Tuesday's 88-78 loss to Clarkson. Freshman Caroline Niland scored a career-high 10 points (all in the second half) against the Golden Knights.
 
Union downed Skidmore 56-40 on Jan. 9. Abby Katz leads the Dutchwomen in scoring with 10.1 points per game. Four other players are averaging more than 8.1 points. The Union defense is allowing just 51.9 points per game.
 
This will be the first meeting of the season between the Thoroughbreds and Engineers. RPI takes a three-game losing streak into Friday's game against St. Lawrence. Sam Krumbhaar comes off the bench to lead the Engineers in scoring with 12.1 points per game.
 
On the men's side, Skidmore will be looking for the season sweep against Union after a 73-64 win on Jan. 9.  Erik Sanders (17.3 points per game) and Edvinas Rupkus (16.3 ppg) continue to put up big numbers for the Thoroughbreds. Rupkus is coming off a career-high 26 points in a 66-61 win Tuesday against Clarkson.
 
Union is coming off a weekend sweep of Bard (79-74) and Vassar (78-74). Deshon Burgess leads the Dutchmen in scoring with 18.9 points per game. William Hython is adding 16.4 points and 10.4 boards per game.
 
RPI has dropped four straight and will face St. Lawrence on Friday. Tom Horvat (14.7 ppg) and Tyler Gendron (10.6 ppg) lead the Engineers in scoring.
 
Skidmore hits the road after for four games after Saturday, returning home Feb. 13 to face Vassar for THE BIG GREEN SCREAM.
