Women's lacrosse rolls into Liberty League Championship game

SCHNECTADY, N.Y.—The Skidmore College women's lacrosse team will have a chance to capture its first ever Liberty League title after a 10-8 semifinal win over Vassar, Friday evening at Frank Bailey Field on the campus of Union College.

The Thoroughbreds, who set a new program record for 13 wins in a season, improve to 13-4 on the year, while the Brewers end the season with a record of 10-6.

Emma Harris and Spencer Morgan led Skidmore with a hat trick each. Harris extended her goal steak to 13 games, while pushed her streak to nine games. Sophomore midfielder Tyler Phillips added three points on two goals and an assist and Allison Byrne had a pair of goals. Senior midfielder Caroline Bowne had a game-high eight draw controls.

Isabelle Goldstein put Vassar in front 8:35 into the game with her 25th of the season, but Phillips knotted the game at 1-1 with 14:33 to play in the half. After 10 scoreless minutes, the Thoroughbreds took control with three goals in the final 4:16 of the stanza to take a 4-1 lead into the break. Byrne gave Skidmore its first lead and Harris potted two consecutive goals to make it 4-1 at the break.

The Brewers bounced back quickly in the second half, as Storm Sideleau cut their deficit to 4-2 45 seconds into the frame. Morgan restored Skidmore's three-goal lead just under a minute later, but Kim Mulvehill brought Vassar back within one with 26:55 to play with her first of the game.

The Thoroughbreds regained control with back-to-back goals from Phillips and Harris and after Sideleau made it 7-4 with her second of the contest, Byrne and Morgan each produced a goal to extend Skidmore's lead to five. Sideleau completed her hat trick with 7:10 to play, but Morgan put the game out of reach, scoring her 38th goal of the season.

Vassar fought back with three goals over the final two minutes to cut the Skidmore advantage to 10-8 with 1:34 to play, but Bowne registered the ensuing draw control Skidmore, allowing the Thoroughbreds to run out the clock for the 10-8 win.

Skidmore had a 28-14 shot advantage and was 11 for 13 on clears while forcing 16 turnovers. The Thoroughbreds also had 19 ground balls to Vassar's 14. In goal, Megan Kolopsky improved to 11-4 with the win by making three saves.

Goldstein and Sideleau led the Brewers with three goals each while Mulvehill added two. Goldstein also had two assists, and Kate Pula made nine saves for Vassar. The Brewers forced 13 turnovers and went 11 for 16 on clears.

Skidmore, which has won eight of its last nine games, takes on host Union in the Liberty League Championship game Saturday at 3 p.m. The Dutchwomen advanced to the final with a 13-6 win over Rochester, extending their conference winning streak to 10 games.
