Women's lacrosse falls to Union in Liberty League Championship game

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—Jackie Hagopian and Emily McGrail score four goals each to lead Union College to its third Liberty League women's lacrosse title in a 13-5 win over Skidmore College, Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field.  

The Thoroughbreds, who set a new program record for wins in a season, finish the year 13-5, while the Dutchwomen improve to 13-3.

Spencer Morgan netted a pair of goals to lead Skidmore. Emma Harris extended her scoring streak to 14 games with a goal and an assist, while Tyler Phillips, Allison Byrne and Paige DiAntonio each tallied. Caroline Bowne a had a game-high seven draw controls and Adele Mackey collected a game-high four ground balls. In goal, Megan Kolopsky made four saves.  

Union's Maggie Comiskey added four points on two goals and two assists and Annie Nelson and Natalie Sullivan registered two goals each. In goal, Kim Grinhaus had a season-high 16 saves.

Union opened the scoring 3:44 into the game, as Hagopian found the back of the net after taking a feed from Jessica Farland and cutting in from the right wing uncontested. Phillips brought the visitors level just under four minutes later with her league-leading 55th goal, but the Dutchwomen fired back with six unanswered goals in a 7:34 span to take a 7-1 lead. Annie Nelson had two free position goals and Natalie Sullivan and McGrail each added a pair during the run.

Skidmore battled back before the end of the half with back-to-back goals. Harris drove down the right wing and dodged her defender before unleashing a shot into the top right corner and Alison Byrne produced her 12th of the season with an unassisted effort with 4:46 remaining in the period to make it 7-3 at the break.

The Dutchwomen regained control in the second half, scoring five straight goals for an 11-3 lead. Hagopian sparked the charge, potting her second of the second of the game 45 seconds into the frame. After Emily Comiskey scored her first of the contest, McGrail added two goals and Hagopian completed her hat trick.

Morgan pulled two back for the Thoroughbreds with two consecutive goals, but Hagopian and Comiskey struck back for Union to make it 14-5. DiAntonio scored the game's final goal with 2:38 remaining, giving the Dutchwomen the 14-6 win.

Skidmore outshot Union 25-22 and had a 13-11 edge in groundballs and a 12-10 advantage in draw controls.

Bowne, Phillips, Morgan and Harris were all named to the Liberty League All-Tournament Team.
