Middlebury rallies late to down Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-- Middlebury College broke open a 4-3 game with 10 runs in the ninth for a 14-4 non-league baseball win over Skidmore College, Tuesday evening at Castle Diamond.
 
The loss drops the Thoroughbreds to 11-20.  The Panthers are 4-19.  Skidmore will close out the regular season with a four-game Liberty League series with Bard.  The Thoroughbreds travel on Saturday with a 12 p.m. start and return home Sunday at 12.
 
Skidmore took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first. Jeb Clarke singled and scored from first when Josh Brown's single got by a Middlebury outfielder.
 
The Panthers responded with three runs on s four hits in the sixth to go up 3-1.
 
Skidmore scratched out another unearned run in its half of the sixth when Clark singled and later scored on a ground out.
 
The Thoroughbreds tied it 3-3 in the seventh when Mike LaVita opened the inning with a walk and scored from second on an error on a bunt by Eric Damphousse.
 
Middlebury took a 4-3 lead in the eighth. Brendan Donohue got hit to open the inning and eventually scored on a bases loaded balk.
 
The Panthers sent 15 batters to the plate in the ninth, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits. Six of the runs came with two outs. Raj Paleka and Drew Coash hit back-to-back home runs to left field to account for the final four runs of the rally. Paleka's was a three-run shot, while Coash was a first pitch rocket to almost the same spot.
 
Clarke was 3-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Brown went 2-5. Ben Murphy started and allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk in 5 1/3.  Shankar Mani (1-2) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs (two earned) in 1 1/3.
 
Paleka finished 3-5 with a home run, a double, two runs and four RBI. Max Araya was 4-6 with two runs, two doubles, and an RBI.
 
Eric Truss pitched well in a no-decision for Middlebury. He went six innings, allowing two runs (none earned) on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts.  Eddie DeArias (1-0) got the win in three innings of relief.
