Men's lacrosse topped by #1 RIT

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Top-ranked RIT used a 13-0 run to secure an 18-5 win over the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team, Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds go to 5-9 overall and 1-5 in the Liberty League, while the Tigers, who extended their conference winning streak to 28 games, improve to 15-0 and 6-0 in league play.

Josh Trachtenberg potted two goals for Skidmore, while Cody Legeza chipped in with a goal and two assists. Kevin Mulvey extended his scoring streak to six games, also adding an assist. Senior defenseman Sam Christiansen had a team-high seven ground balls, also causing a turnover. In goal, Chris Baughan stopped 13 shots in the first 45 minutes, while John Sutherland made six saves in the final quarter.

Kyle Aquin recorded seven points on six goals and an assist to lead the Tigers. Eddie Kiesa added a hat trick and Allister Warren had a goal and four helpers. In goal, Pat Johnston made four saves in 39:54 of action for his 15th win of the season.

RIT got out to a 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals from Aquin. Trachtenberg put Skidmore on the board with 7:26 to play in the first, bouncing a shot in off the turf, but Kiesa restored the Tigers two-goal cushion 26 seconds later. The Thoroughbreds struck back in the final minutes of the quarter, pulling even with back-to-back goals. Legeza took a dump pass from Jack Metzler and scored from in tight to make it 3-2 and Trachtenberg tied it up on a Skidmore man-up opportunity, ripping home a sidearm shot from the left wing.

RIT took control in the second quarter, blowing the game open with nine unanswered goals. After Aquin put the Tigers back in front, Johnston scored his first goal of the season, collecting a ground ball following a save and going coast-to-coast before converting from close range. Aquin added two more goals in the quarter and Ryan Lee produced two goals in the run.

The Tigers continued to pour it on in the second half, outscoring the Thoroughbreds 4-0 in the third quarter. Skidmore scored back-to-back goals to open the fourth, as Mulvey scored on a man-up opportunity and Sean Fosse netted his first goal of the season, but RIT scored the game's final two goals to claim the 18-5 win.

The Tigers outshot the Thoroughbreds 47-2 7 and had a 38-20 edge in ground balls. RIT won 19 of 28 faceoffs, led by Jake Quay, who finished 11-for-14 at the "X".

Skidmore closes out the season on the road at Union at 12 p.m. Saturday, April 25.
