Men's lacrosse drops season finale at #12 Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—No. 12 Union built a 7-3 halftime lead against the Skidmore College men's lacrosse team and never looked back, hanging on for the 14-9 Liberty League win Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Stadium.

The Thoroughbreds finish the season with an overall record of 5-10 and 1 -6 mark in conference play. The Dutchmen go to 12-3 overall and 5-2 in league play.

Freshman Cody Legeza posted his third straight multi-point game with a pair of goals. Kevin Mulvey extended his scoring streak to eight games with a goal and an assist and Josh Trachtenberg and Jack Metzler each contributed a goal and a helper. Senior defenseman Sam Christiansen had a game-high four caused turnovers, while freshman goalkeeper Chris Baughan had a team-high five ground balls. Baughan stopped eight shots over the first 52:35 and John Sutherland made three saves in 7:25 of relief.

Charlie Ross led Union with four goals. Adam Rosenthal netted a hat trick and Paul Alberti had a goal and two assists. Connor Hall went 13-for-18 at the faceoff X and added five ground balls. In goal, Stefan Basile picked up the win, making 10 saves in 50:20.

Rosenthal put the Dutchmen ahead 31 seconds into the game, but Legeza provided the equalizer just 98 seconds later. Union pulled back in front with three-straight goals, including two from Ross, but Legeza produced the final goal of the quarter to make it 5-2.

Trachtenberg cut the Skidmore deficit to two 1:27 into the second quarter, but again the Dutchmen answered with three consecutive goals to take a 7-3 lead into the break.

Alberti and Ross pushed the Union lead to 9-3, potting back-to-back goals to open the second half, and after RJ Caruso pulled one back for the Thoroughbreds, Rosenthal scored his second of the game.

Freshman Brendan Halloran opened the scoring in the fourth quarter and after Union converted on two man-up opportunities, Skidmore scored two goals in a 36-second span. Mulvey registered his 18th of the season and Metzler made it 12-7 with his 13th of the year. The Dutchmen extended their lead to 14-7 as Rosenthal completed his hat trick and Michaael Adams registered his second goal of the season, putting the game out of reach. Freshman Jack Curry tallied his fifth goal of the season and Thomas Park scored his first with 14 seconds to play, but Union secured the 14-9 win.

The Dutchmen outshot the Thoroughbreds 49-30 and had a 36-31 edge in ground balls. Union won 17-of-27 faceoffs.

"We're obviously disappointed with the result against a good Union team, but I'm very proud of the way that our guys fought and competed for 60 minutes," said Skidmore head coach Patrick Hart. "Our seniors have been great leaders all year and they continued to lead us today. That group of nine young men will be hard to replace, but we are confident in the direction of our program and the culture that they helped us establish."
