SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team outscored Trinity (Conn.) 6-1 in the third quarter to pull away for a 9-5 non-league win, Tuesday night at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds go to 5-8, while the Bantams fall to 4-9.

Ryan Warnock was the driving force for Skidmore, tying a career-high with 13 faceoff wins and finishing 13-for-16 at the X. He posted his first career multi-point game with a goal and an assist and added a career-high eight ground balls. Brendan Halloran had two goals and two assists, Kevin Mulvey extended his scoring streak to five games with a pair of goals and Cody Legeza contributed a goal and two assists.

Both goalies came up big in the first quarter to keep the score at 0-0. Chris Baughan stopped four shots in goal for Skidmore, while Mickey Zaverucha made three saves for Trinity.

The Bantams finally broke the deadlock 9:19 into the second, as Michael McQuiston fired home a shot from the left wing. Cody Legeza provided a response for the Thoroughbreds 2:38 later, fighting off defenders before converting from in tight.

Skidmore wasted no time getting on the board in the second half, netting two goals in the first 1:16. Ryan Warnock gave the Thoroughbreds their first lead off the opening faceoff, unleashing an uncontested shot after winning the draw and collecting the groundball. RJ Caruso doubled the Skidmore advantage 1:01 later with a shot from the left wing.

Trinity cut it to 3-2, as Matthew Houck netted his team-leading 28th goal with a sidearm laser after receiving a perfectly threaded pass from Michael Lofrese, but the Thoroughbreds came firing back with three unanswered goals in 70 seconds. Connor Hunter sparked the charge, taking a feed from Brendan Halloran and scoring from close range. Warnock won the ensuing faceoff and picked out Halloran alone in front of goal, who potted his 12th of the year, and Jack Metlzer made it 5-2 with a low-to-high shot  from 12 yards. Mulvey pushed the Thoroughbreds lead to 6-2 heading into the final stanza, scoring on a counterattack after Josh Trachtenberg caused a turnover on a Bantams clearing attempt.

Mulvey doubled his goal output for the day 4:56 into the fourth quarter, bouncing a shot in off the turf and Halloran added his second of the day with 7:24 to play to put the game out of question at 9-2.

Ben Preston notched an unassisted goal to cut it to 9-3 with 4:15 left in regulation. The Bantams added two goals in the final 26 seconds of play on back-to-back tallies from Ryan DeSimone and Hauck, but it was too little, too late, as Skidmore secured the 9-5 win.

Baughan finished with 15 saves, including seven in the fourth quarter, to go along with five ground balls, while Zaverucha turned away six shots. Trinity outshot Skidmore 41-31, while the Thoroughbreds had a 33-29 edge in ground balls.

"I'm very proud of the effort that our guys gave tonight against a very good Trinity team," said Skidmore coach Patrick Hart.  "We knew that they were a team that wanted to play fast and we were going to have to control possession and control the pace of play to give ourselves a chance to win the game.  Our entire face-off unit did a great job of earning us possessions throughout the night and our offense showed great patience and execution.  Defensively I thought we did a good job of playing with a sense of urgency and purpose against a very skilled Trinity offense.

"Looking forward We're excited to have the opportunity to host the number 1 team in the nation on Saturday for our Senior Day.  It is going to be a great challenge for our guys and we are excited for it!"

Skidmore hosts #1 RIT at 12 p.m. Saturday, April 18 in its final home game of the season.
