Men's lacrosse falls to St. Lawrence in league opener, 14-6

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team was topped by St. Lawrence, 14-6, Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field in the Liberty League opener for both teams.

The Thoroughbreds go to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the Liberty League, while the Saints improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Josh Trachtenberg had two goals for Skidmore, while Kevin Mulvey and Jack Metzler each contributed a goal and an assist. Freshmen Brendan Halloran and Jack Curry rounded out the scoring for the Thoroughbreds.

Skidmore jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind a pair of Trachtenberg goals. He opened the scoring 1:50 into the contest and added his second with 8:09 to play in the quarter, taking a feed from Connor Hunter and converting from close range.

St. Lawrence pulled one back before the end of the quarter, as its leading scorer Tommy Hovey tallied his 19th goal of the season on a man-up opportunity.

Metzler restored the Thoroughbreds two-goal lead 2:39 into the second quarter, but the Saints answered back with four unanswered goals over the final 10:12 of the frame to take a 5-3 lead into the break. After Jon Fairbanks knotted the score at 3-3, Andrew Jarrett gave St. Lawrence its first lead of the contest with four minutes left. Conor Healey scored the last goal of the half, spinning past his defender before scoring from in tight.

St. Lawrence's offense continued to find success in the third quarter, opening the stanza with five-straight goals from five different scorers to pull in front 10-3. Skidmore managed to chip away at the lead with two quick goals, as Mulvey potted his first of the season and assisted on a Halloran tally 2:01 later.

The Saints proved to be too much in the fourth quarter, putting the game out of reach with four consecutive goals. Curry scored the game's final goal with 1:12 remaining.

Healey recorded a hat trick for the Saints, also adding an assist. Jeremy Vautour also produced four points with a goal and three helpers and Hovey and Charlie Duprey each had a goal and an assist.

St. Lawrence outshot Skidmore 43-26, while the Thoroughbreds owned a 32-31 edge in groundballs. Chris Baughan stopped 13 shots in goal for Skidmore, while Andrew Butturini earned his first win of the season for the Saints, making nine saves.

Skidmore makes the short trip to take on crosstown rival #18 RPI at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 25.
