Skidmore falls to RPI in Liberty League playoffs

Box Score TROY, N.Y. -Courtney McArthur went 3 for 3 with two home runs and Kristina Weltzin allowed just three hits with eight strikeouts to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a 6-0 win in the opening game of the Liberty League Tournament at Doris Robison Field.

The top-seeded Engineers improve to 23-16 and advance to the winners' bracket. They play either the University of Rochester, the second seed, or Union College, the third seed, on Friday at 10am. The Thoroughbreds, the fourth seed, fall to 14-19 and play Friday at 12:30pm.


Offensively for the visitors, freshman Lauren Fortunato (Drexel Hill, PA / The Agnes Irwin School) had a hit to extend her hitting streak to 11 games and classmate Lauren Gorstein (Yorktown Heights, NY / Yorktown) reached on a hit by pitch to extend her on-base streak to 19 games.

McArthur (Coventry, RI / St. Mary Academy), a freshman first baseman, hit a solo home run to leftfield in the fourth inning and a two-run homer to center in the sixth inning. She also had a double with two runs scored and three runs batted in.


Weltzin , a junior, (Commerce Town, MI / Walled Lake Northern) gave up just three singles, to three different players. She walked three and hit two batters in the complete game effort. She is now 14-6 on the season. Taking the loss for Skidmore was sophomore Cassie Fishkin (New City, NY / Clarkstown South), who pitched all six innings. She is now 10-10.
