Box Score 4 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Skidmore College softball team wrapped up play at the Rebel Spring Games, going 2-2 over its final four contests.
The Thoroughbreds (2-6) knocked off Defiance College and Waynesburg University, and were topped by Roger Williams University and Suffolk University.
Skidmore 4, Roger Williams 14
The Hawks scored four runs in the top of the first, but Skidmore cut the lead to 4-2 with a pair of RBI doubles by
Lauren Fortunato and
Mackenzie Whiting in the bottom half of the inning. Roger Williams continued to pour on the offense, adding four runs in the top of the second to pull away for good.
Skidmore 3, Defiance 2
Fortunato pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and one earned run with two strikeouts for her first career win. She helped her own cause in the bottom of the first inning, driving in two runs with a triple and later scoring on an error. The win was the first for Skidmore head coach
Hannah Shalett.
Skidmore 9, Waynesburg 1
The Thoroughbreds offense exploded in a five-run fifth inning to help them secure their second-straight win. Gorstein and
Abby Shea put Skidmore in front with back-to-back RBI singles and Fortunato increased the lead to 5-0 with the next at-bat, belting a three-run homerun.
Cassie Fishkin went the distance on the mound, allowing one run on eight hits in her first win of the season, while also going 3-4 with an RBI.
Skidmore 2, Suffolk 7
After Suffolk scored three runs in the top of the first, Skidmore countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Fortunato delivered a triple, plating Shea and scored on a Whiting sacrifice fly. The Rams bounced back with two runs in the top of the second and the top of the fourth, holding on for the 7-2 win.
The Thoroughbreds host Utica College at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 26.
