Skidmore held off by Vassar

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College women's basketball team erased a 15-point halftime deficit, but fell in overtime, 73-67, to Vassar, in a Liberty League contest Friday night.
 
The Thoroughbreds (9-13, 4-9 Liberty) outscored the Brewers (17-4, 10-2) 43-28 in the second half, forcing the game into overtime. In the extra session, Cyndi Matsuoka knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:18 to play to put the game out of reach.
 
Angela Botiba led the Thoroughbreds with 18 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Jordyn Wartts added 13 points, eight boards and four assists and Ella Scheuerell chipped in with eight points and 11 rebounds.
 
Vassar led by as many as 17 in the second stanza, but Skidmore battled back with a 20-6 run took its first lead of the game thanks to a 20-6 run. Wartts gave the Thoroughbreds their first lead since the opening minute of play, converting on a three-point play with 4:09 remaining in regulation to make it 54-53.
 
With Vassar up 56-55 with just over a minute to play, Scheuerell nailed a triple to push Skidmore back in front.  The Brewers went without points on their next possession and were forced to foul. Wartts made one of two to put the visitors ahead 59-56 with 17 seconds on the clock.
 
After a timeout, Caitlyn Drakeley knocked down a 3-pointer, sending the game to overtime, where the Brewers would eventually pull away for the win.
 
Vassar shot 52.9 percent (9-17) from beyond the arc. The Brewers were out-rebounded for just fifth time this season, as the Thoroughbreds won the rebounding tally, 57-49?.
 
Drakeley scored a game-high 21 points to go along with 13 rebounds for Vassar, Matsuoka had 19 points, six rebounds and eight assists and Hannah Senftleber tallied 16 points and added nine caroms.
 
The Thoroughbreds travel to Bard Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m.
