Box Score CANTON, N.Y.-- Liberty League leader St. Lawrence University held off a determined Skidmore College squad for a 63-58 women's basketball win, Wednesday night at Burkman Gymnasium.
Thoroughbred standout
Angela Botiba led the Thoroughbreds with 21 points and 15 rebounds.
Jordyn Wartts added 14 points.
Amber Holgate had 11 points off the bench.
St. Lawrence remains atop the conference standings after winning its sixth straight game, improving to 14-6 (10-1). Meanwhile, Skidmore had its three-game win streak end to fall to 9-12 (4-8).
Neither team was able to gain separation throughout the first half, as both squads missed several open jumpers and lay-ups that could've gathered momentum. The teams went to the locker room tied at 26-26, with Wartts and Botiba finishing with 10 points each for Skidmore.
The Saints opened a 37-31 lead, with 14:52 to play in the second half. However, Skidmore came right back with buckets from
Migle Vilunaite and
Ella Scheuerell to keep it a two point game.
Botiba would tie the score with at 42-42, as Skidmore began to lob the ball into the post and let her go to work. SLU responded with an 11-0 run that seemingly put the game away at 53-42 with 5:36 remaining.
Skidmore would pick up full court pressure in the final minutes and created several turnovers to give itself chances to close the gap. Botiba managed back-to-back lay-ups to make it a one-possession game, 59-56, with 53 seconds left. Unfortunately for the Thoroughbreds, they were unable to score again until the final second, missing six straight field goal tries as St. Lawrence put the game away with free throws, earning the 63-58 win.
Skidmore is at Vassar on Friday night at 6 p.m.
