Skidmore powers past Marietta, 67-53

Box Score GUAYNABO CITY, Puerto Rico— The Skidmore College women's basketball team won its third straight game with a 67-53 win over Marietta College, Monday evenning in the second game of the San Juan Shootout.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 4-4 on the season, while Marietta falls to 5-7.

Angela Botiba led four Skidmore players in double figures with 22 points, nine rebounds, three blocks, and three assists.  Lindsay Davis scored 12 points, while Ella Scheuerell and Amber Holgate added 10 points each.   All of Scheurell's points came in the second half, while Botiba scored 13 in the second stanza. Botiba was 10-12 from the line, including 7-8 in the second half.

Marietta led by eight at the half, 30-22.  Skidmore used a 15-5 run to open the second half and take a 37-35 lead on an Amber Holgate layup at 14:07. There would be three more lead changes, before the Thoroughbreds closed out the game with a 16-4 run over the final 4:56 of regulation for the 67-53 win.

"The team played hard for 40 minutes and we got strong contributions from different players," said Skidmore coach Darren Bennett.  "Marietta is one of the deepest teams I've seen with a lot of good, tough players coming in and out of the game.  Their point guard play is great, they've got kids that can score off the bounce and their inside players are have strong games.  It was a good test for our kids and they stepped up and got it done.

"Angela had the kind of game that we expect from her every night and made things easier for her teammates on the perimeter.  We have to continue feeding her the ball and she has to continue to produce with paint scores, by playing inside out basketball and by getting to the free throw line. Lindsey shot the ball well from the perimeter and Ella had a breakout game and played with as much confidence as I've seen her play with in her three years with us.

"Although Marietta beat us on the boards and had great depth, I think our kids matched them in both points and that was the difference tonight.  We had a complete team effort from our starters, to our non-starters.  It's great to see the team playing strong, tough and very much together going into conference play this weekend."

Skidmore opens Liberty League play at home Friday against RIT at 6 p.m.
