Skidmore women's basketball second-half rally comes up short

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Skidmore College women's basketball outscored Coast Guard 42-29 in the second half, but it was not enough as the Bears managed to hold on for the 67-63 win, Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2014 Skidmore Invitational Women's Basketball Tournament played at the Williamson Sports Center.

The Thoroughbreds (0-2) fought back from a 17-point halftime deficit, tying the game with 2:43 to play after a 9-0 run. Alexi Howland put the Bears (1-1) back in front with a three on their ensuing possession, but Angela Botiba made a pair of free throws and recorded a steal late, giving the Thoroughbreds one final possession with nine seconds to play. However, Coast Guard locked down on defense and forced a turnover without allowing Skidmore to put up a shot, sealing the win.

Skidmore junior guard Amber Holgate tied for a game-high with 16 points. Molly McLaughlin had 14 points, five assists and five rebounds, Kelly Donnelly added 11 points and six boards and Angela Botiba had eight points and eight rebounds.

Meghan Fornaro scored eight points in the opening four minutes to give Coast Guard a 14-5 lead. The Bears extended their lead with 17-7 run late in the first taking a 38-21 lead into the break.

Skidmore chipped away at the lead in the second half, coming back within double-digits with 6:54 to play after a pair of Holgate free throws and a layup by Migle Vilunaite.

Fornaro hit from three-point range on the Bears next possession, but Holgate answered back with a three of her own to start the Thoroughbreds late charge. Botiba got a layup to fall, Holgate added another three and Donnelly produced five points to tie the game at 61-61 before Howland put the game of out reach with her three-pointer.

Fornaro tied for a game-high with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go along with six assists, six steals and four rebounds. Howland added 14 points, Dani Knox had 10 points, Torie Sutherland prodcued nine points and 10 boards and Gill Gerton chipped in with 11 points off the bench.

Skidmore went 20-of-63 from the field, while Coast Guard was 26-of-57. The Thoroughbreds outrebounded the Bears 47-33, including a 24-10 edge on the offensive glass.

Skidmore hosts Hamilton at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24.


Second-half rally surge pushes Cortland past Trinity, 68-48

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. --The SUNY Cortland women's basketball outscored Trinity College 37-15 in the second half en route to a 68-48 win at the 2014 Skidmore Invitational Women's Basketball Tournament, Sunday afternoon at the Williamson Sports Center.

The Bantams (1-1) took a 33-31 lead into the half, but the Red Dragons (2-0) came out firing in the second, stringing together a 25-3 run in the first 10 minutes to put the game out of reach.

Cortland junior forward Brittney Dumas and freshman guard Kerry McHugh tied for a game-high 12 points. Cassidy Chapko added 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting and Sarah Seger chipped in eight points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Trinity senior forward Taylor Higgins had nine points and and sophomore guard Sheena Landy added nine points, six rebounds and three steals.

The Red Dragons went 23-of-54 from the field, while the Bantams went 17-of-55. Cortland outrebounded Trinity 68-48.
