Box Score POTSDAM, NY -
Jordyn Wartts and
Angela Botiba each recorded double-doubles, but it was not enough as the Skidmore College women's basketball team was downed by Clarkson University in overtime, 49-43, Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Thoroughbreds, who saw their four game-winning streak come to an end, go to 5-5 (0-1 Liberty), while the Golden Knights move to 6-3 (1-0 Liberty).
Wartts led all scorers with 14 points and added 11 boards, while Botiba chipped in with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
In a very low-scoring first half, it was tough for either team to make much of a run to gain a clear advantage. Skidmore held Clarkson scoreless for the first four minutes, openining up a 6-0 run capped by a Botiba layup. Ashley Loggins responded for the Golden Knights, knocking down a 3-pointer, but the Thoroughbreds would again hold Clarkson scoreless an eight-minute span, building a 13-6 lead midway through the half. The Golden Knights then more than doubled their offensive output with a 10-0 run, taking the lead on a 3-pointer from Cara Manfredi at 3:45.
Migle Vilunaite tallied a pair of free throws to cut the Thoroughbreds deficit one at the half at 16-15.
Â
Skidmore's defense continued to cause Clarkson problems to start the second half, forcing the Golden Knights to go 0-6 to open the frame. The Thoroughbreds opened up a seven-point lead with just over 10 minutes to play with point lead with a layup from Wartts and back-to-back baskets from Botiba.
Â
Despite the drought, the Knights were able to rally back, taking the lead at 32-31 at the 5:35 mark thanks to a 9-1 run. From the 7:45 mark to the 1:11 mark, Skidmore was held without a point and after a 3-pointer from Manfredi, it appeared as if the Knights would pull out the victory. However, the Knights were unable to secure the victory with free throws down the stretch, and a 3-pointer in the corner from Skidmore's
Allie Keller tied the game at 40-40 with 17 seconds to go and the game went into overtime.
Â
The two teams traded free-throws at the start of overtime, but Katelyn Curtis put the Clarkson ahead for good with just over two minutes to play, hitting a 3-pointer.
Â
Manfredi led Clarkson with 12 points, while Loggins and Curtis each chipped in 10 points, with Loggins adding in eight rebounds.
Â
"Great game by Clarkson. They are definitely the team in the Liberty League that no one is talking about and everybody should be," said Skidmore head coach
Darren Bennett. "They are tough aggressive and exact. We had a challenging time shooting the ball tonight, partly due to their length and aggressive play and partly because we just didn't shot the ball well. It's a tough road trip at anytime during the season but this gives us a lot to grow on to start conference play.
Â
"We had some good things happen for us with inside passing and scoring. We definitely need to go there more often.
Â
"There's a lot of basketball yet to play but again this is something to measure up and grow from moving forward."
