Saints hold off Thoroughbreds for 69-56 Liberty League win

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-- St. Lawrence scored 18 second-chance points on the way to a 69-56 Liberty League win over Skidmore College, Tuesday night at the Williamson Sports Center.

The Thoroughbreds are 7-10 and 1-7 in league play, while the Saints improve to 9-6 and 7-1.

Jordyn Wartts led Skidmore with 18 points and six rebounds. Ella Scheuerell added 10 points and five rebounds.  Molly McLaughlin had four assists and nine points.

Kara McDuffee and Caroline Dalton scored 18 points each for SLU, with McDuffee earning the double/double with 13 rebounds to go along with six assists and four steals.

The first half went back-and-forth with the five lead changes and two ties. Dalton hit a three with four seconds left to give the Saints a 26-21 advantage going into the break.

St. Lawrence used a 13-2 run over the first seven minutes of the second half to open a 39-23 lead. Skidmore never quit, getting to within nine twice, but the Saints were able to stop each run.

SLU scored 13 of its 18 second-chance points in the second half and had a 45-34 advantage on the boards.

"Tonight we were out muscled by SLU." said Skidmore coach Darren Bennett. "They flexed and we didn't flex back. When good teams like SLU flex on you in your house you have to flex back and keep flexing, play with a chip on your shoulder and we didn't do that as a team. SLU really did us in on the boards. Defending the three, stopping drives middle and ball toughness were our three game goals. We did a good job on the three ball and defended off the bounce pretty good but we did not step up on the boards as a team and that's tough to swallow.

"We continue to do some good things but tonight I really feel like we didn't give total concentration to working hard in all areas. Our kids work hard we tell them they do. But tonight we didn't and we have to get better at that and get back on track in the tough, blue collar, lunch box kind of way."

Skidmore is home again on Friday at 6 p.m. vs. Bard.
