Skidmore knocks off RPI, 60-51

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Angela Botiba and Jordyn Wartts both recorded double-doubles to lead the Skidmore College women's basketball past RPI, 60-51, in a conference matchup Friday night at the Williamson Sports Center.

Botiba scored a game-high 16 points to go with 11 rebounds and Wartts added 14 points and a game-high 14 boards. Amber Holgate chipped in with 13 points off the bench, shooting 5-of-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

The Engineers opened up a 14-9 lead midway through the first half, but Holgate and Botiba combined for 10 unanswered points to give the Thoroughbreds their first lead (16-14) with 7:56 remaining in the first. They continued to build on the momentum with baskets from Wartts and Ella Scheuerell giving them an eight-point cushion (26-18) with just under three minutes to play in the first. Jackie Sortor's layup helped keep RPI close, sparking a 6-2 run late in the first to cut the deficit to four at 32-28 at halftime.

Skidmore restored its eight-point lead on back-to-back jumpers from Botiba and Molly McLaughlin to start the second half, but the Engineers battled back, tying the game (43-43) with a 7-0 run capped by a Courtney Reynolds 3-pointer.

Wartts and Botiba each made key shots on the next two Thoroughbreds possessions to make it 47-43.  Courtney Reynolds cut the Skidmore lead to two with 8:31 to play, but the Thoroughbreds held on, outscoring the Engineers 13-6 over the final eight minutes for the 60-51 win.

Amanda Lynch was RPI's top scorer, tallying 14 points and Ashley Clough added 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Skidmore shot 39-percent (23-59) for the game, while RPI finished at 29.2-percent (19-65). The Thoroughbreds outrebounded the Engineers 34-27.

"It was good for out team to get the first conference win," said Skidmore head coach Darren Bennett. "Everyone has been working really, really hard and it was good to see their hard work pay off tonight. RPI scores in the mid-60s, so for our team to hold them to 51 that's a great defensive effort by everyone.

"We did a good job on the boards and attacked the rim off the bounce and through the post. RPI is tough to prepare for with their depth, open offensive scheme and ability to shoot the three ball and attack the rim. Their record is not an indicator of their ability. They are a good team.

"This is certainly something we can build on and hopefully get some momentum going into tomorrow and through the rest of the season."
