Skidmore suffers 3-2 setback against RPI

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Junior Brock Bakewell recorded his second multi-goal game of the season but it was not enough, as the Thoroughbreds fell to the RPI Engineers, 3-2, in overtime in the Liberty League opener for both teams.

Skidmore only jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute as Adam Beek delivered a perfectly placed cross onto Bakewell's foot inside the six yard box.

Bakewell doubled the Thoroughbreds lead in the 33rd mintue with his team-high fifth goal of the season. Todd Jensen was denied by the crossbar on a rocket from 35 yards out, but the ball dropped to Bakewell, who tucked a left-footed strike inside the near post.

Nathaniel Gunderson's glancing header in the 37th minute shifted the momentum in RPI's favor. Joey Eilert delivered a corner kick from the left and Gunderson was first to the ball, guiding it just inside the far post.

The Engineers had the majority of possession after halftime, but they could not find a way through the Skidmore defense. The Thoroughbreds put up plenty of resistance and were 49 seconds from victory when Gunderson's second goal of the game gave RPI new life.  Paul Lentine whipped in a cross from the right wing to Gunderson, who brought the ball down slotted his shot inside the right post.

Gunderson completed his hat-trick in overtime after he raced down the right wing and cut into the Skidmore box on a breakaway, narrowly beating the goalkeeper with a shot from 12 yards.

RPI outshot Skidmore 15-9 and held a 6-3 edge in corners. Reigning Liberty League Rookie of the Week Derrick Yam made two saves in goal for the Thoroughbreds, while Rob Dewald made three saves in goal for the Engineers.

The Thoroughbreds (3-3-1, 0-1 Liberty) travel to SUNY Plattsburgh Saturday, Sept. 21 for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
